As if the prospect of seeing one of the most influential jazz saxophonists to pick up a horn in person weren’t tempting enough, a little bird just shared with us that Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be sitting in with Ornette Coleman for a portion of his performance on Wednesday night.

Before anyone starts feeling haunted by visions of a free jazz interpretation of ‘Under the Bridge,’ Flea has been a devout jazz fan since he was a kid, and the jazz trumpet was his first instrument growing up. Flea recently revisited his early studies with a number of classes at USC in 2008, and interviewed Charlie Haden for Bass Player Magazine that same year.

Given that Coleman’s lineup already lists Tony Falanga and Al MacDowell on bass for Wednesday’’s show (along with his son Denardo Coleman on drums), it’s hard to imagine Flea picking up his Fender to become a third -- but not impossible. Whatever plans are being cooked up, the only thing for sure is a night that already promised to be pretty adventurous just got a little more so.
