Jimmy Fallon makes room for Broadway musicals on NBC’s ‘Late Night’

It’s one of the unspoken laws of the late-night talk-show circuit -- guest celebrities agree to put in an appearance on the comedy couch in exchange for air time to promote their latest movie, album, TV show, book or whatever.
This week, NBC’s ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ will dedicate those precious on-air minutes to Broadway, showcasing a variety of productions that are currently running in New York.
On Monday, the cast of the Tony-winning ‘Memphis’ is scheduled to appear on the show to perform a selection from the musical. On Tuesday, Sean Hayes is set to drop by with cast mates from the musical ‘Promises, Promises.’
Wednesday’s guest is expected to be Billie Joe Armstrong, the frontman for Green Day who will present ‘American Idiot,’ the musical based on the band’s music. On Thursday, cast members from the upcoming show ‘Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson’ are set to make an appearance.
Two of the featured Broadway shows had their premieres in Southern California. ‘Memphis’ ran at the La Jolla Playhouse before transferring to Broadway while ‘Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson’ was produced at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City prior to moving to New York’s Public Theater and then on to Broadway.
Fallon himself started his career on the stage when he trained at the Groundlings Theater in Los Angeles before he was hired as a cast member for ‘Saturday Night Live.’
The comedian hosted this year’s Emmy Awards ceremony and showed off his musical chops in a homage to ‘Glee.’
‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ airs nightly at around 12:35 a.m. on KNBC.
