Will Ferrell spoofs ‘Send in the Clowns’ on David Letterman

The producers of ‘A Little Night Music’ on Broadway owe a big thanks to actor Will Ferrell. On Monday night, the star was promoting his movie ‘The Other Guys’ on ‘Late Show With David Letterman’ and took time out from his appearance to plug the revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical that is playing at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

Ferrell declared that he will be replacing Catherine Zeta-Jones in the role of Desiree. (In actuality, Bernadette Peters recently took over the part.) He then performed a version of the number ‘Send in the Clowns,’ which is intended to be sung by a woman.

Add the Ferrell version to Culture Monster’s YouTube survey of ‘Send in the Clowns’ posted on Monday.

If you’re not already a fan of Ferrell’s brand of deadpan surrealist humor, his spoof of the song isn’t likely to convert you. (It’s weird and filled with non-sequiturs, to say the least.)

And in case you’re wondering why Ferrell singled out the Sondheim musical, it turns out that some of the producers of ‘A Little Night Music’ also produced Ferrell’s 2009 Broadway show, ‘You’re Welcome, America.’

Broadway, in its own way, can be just as clubby as Hollywood.
