In May, the Associated Press lost its longtime theater critic and reporter Michael Kuchwara, a respected voice in the Broadway press establishment who passed away from complications of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis at the age of 63.

On Thursday, the AP said that Mark Kennedy, who had worked for the news service for 13 years, is returning to the organization to assume the role of theater writer and reviewer. In addition to covering the theater beat, Kennedy's responsibilities will also include music, film and other aspects of pop culture.

Kennedy, 40, has worked as an editor at AOL News in New York since March, said the AP.

During his previous tenure at the AP, Kennedy wrote about theater, music, film, books and more. He also was an editor on the AP's national and supervisory desks, working on events such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. In 2003, he reported from Kabul, Afghanistan.
