Jackie Evancho is one of the breakout performers this season on "America's Got Talent" -- a 10-year-old who sings Puccini with a mature operatic voice. Is Jackie an opera singer? No. Can she do something great with her voice? That depends, say children's voice experts.
Listen to Jackie's "America's Got Talent" performance of “O mio babbino caro” above and her audition below. And then click here for the Calendar story about the seasoning of young singers like Jackie.

Jackie most certainly has her own sound. she doesn't imitate opera singers because neither she nor her family enjoy that shrill sound this particular genre encourages. jackie prefers to listen to tween pop (ala Disney) just like the rest of her peer group. in addition, it is the press who call her an "opera" singer while the family claims her genre to be classical crossover with the likes of singers such as josh groban, andrea bocelli or sarah brightman. Jackie has always known that her own voice is much more suited to this genre than the belting pop style and she enjoys the beauty and emotion that the CC genre elicits in herself and her audience.

While I appreciate the unusual quality of Ms. Evancho voice I found her performance during the semi-finals to be difficult to listen to -- She came across as shrill and pushed --- to my ear it was laking in the musicality and ease which would have made it truly memorable. while she is definitely unusual the bes thing that could happen is for her to slow down and stop pushing the clock -- Only time will tell if she will develop into a truly great opera star -- for now she is simply another novelty act

The first piece was definitely more practiced, you can find an old youtube of it. The semi-final performance was not as good, clearly. It's too bad she is put under all of this pressure so soon, I only hope--like she--that she doesn't mess it up. She is far more likely to make mistakes like the ending note since she has not been training for very long. The change in her youtube performances have shown her soaring under good teaching methods. It's clear that the untrained world thinks she is much better than she is since the first AGT performance was so good. Hopefully she'll make it through the next two songs without the critics tearing her to pieces and her voice gets strong enough to hold up to the touring schedule.
Remember Julie Andrews can only sing five notes now and she started singing lessons at age nine. It won't last forever, lets hope she at least gets a million dollars out of it so she can afford the best teachers.

Please, she's eleven years old! There are people that are calling themselves "mature" that don't have the poise and sophistication that this child has! She is remarkable. A true star in the making!

i think her performance last week was sung too fast. compared to the andrae bocelli version anyway. remember last years winner kevin skinner. i think he won based solely on his audition performance. he sucked the rest of the season. i believe jackie can only get better with practise and age. i think she is more than a novelty act. and id definitely go to vegas to see her perform if she wins.

She made me so happy to listen to her sweet voice.
She look like a life Angel...We all should appreciate her & her parents who had put so much efforts ,times to help train, support her to become a great singer. She is 1 of very few millions kids w this voice in earth.

Monday's semi final performance on Sept 8 was spectacular and to near perfection! Watching the Puccini performance and then the Semi Final performance last night - she now seems more confident and last night there was nothing nervous about her, only shear perfection.

Jackie has a gift from God. May she always use it to serve Him.

Yes, she has some talent. Not as powerful as a true Opera singer, but she's young and has time for more training. It's funny how the mommies here are spouting "such genius" and "what an angel from heaven." Geez, you women sure do get carried away.
Hey, Charlene, the girl's ten, not eleven. Can't you read?

This girl has got a talent well beyond her years.I have to re-iterate,imagine the possibilities if she can sing other genres besides opera???I myself believes she could.Keep it up Jackie, and good luck.

Hey Gerry, while everyone is certain to have an opinion and you are entitled to your own opinion, (Even if it is wrong) why don't you and the other critics of this child just get off your high horse??? If Miss Evancho came across as shrill and pushed to your ear, my suggestion is to make a beeline to the nearest audiologist and find out where your hearing loss is. My ear told me she was angelic in her performance and I really don't think I am alone. (62 year old life long opera listener) Like I said before, you critics are the problem and I have previously asked: Why don't you just let her alone and be a kid? She certainly is enjoying herself and she is a beautiful example for other children to follow. My oh my, wouldn't the world be a richer place if all children were as wonderful as this child???

It is my opinion that if Jackie Evancho had sung the song "Memories", instead of the Opera type music for her last performance, she would have walked away as the No. 1 winner. Majority of the people watching America's got talent
do not listen to Opera music. Grimm's last performance he sang When a man loves a woman, people relate to that, so this leaves a lasting impression on there minds. On youtube Jackie sings the song Memories and she does a beautiful job of it.

Agreed!

Good point Eileen. Jackie can sing operatic excerpts, classical, country, pop, and probably just about any other genre of music she puts her mind to! A non-classical approach may very well have given her the victory on AGT, but I think that she may have influenced a LOT of music fans towards classical music by going that route, and that's quite extraordinary in itself.

The streets of Heaven are missing an Angel for the moment. Opera has not been my forte, but Jackie's voice is so beautiful that I have to dry a tear each time I hear her sing. Hope Jackie can continue without end to bless us with her amazing voice.
