Gustavo Dudamel finds time to unwind in L.A.

Dudamel

As the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel leads a hectic life filled with rehearsals, concerts, meetings, more rehearsals and more meetings.

Still, the 29-year-old Venezuelan conductor knows how to relax and have a good time away from Walt Disney Concert Hall. Although he's only been the orchestra's music director for one year, Dudamel already has favorite local spots when it comes to unwinding and recharging his musical batteries.

In an interview with the Times, Dudamel named two restaurants that he enjoys — one near his home in Beachwood Canyon and another farther away in Beverly Hills. He also talks about where he likes to buy music as well as where he and his wife, Eloisa Maturén, like to catch a movie for date night.

Read the full story about where Dudamel like to go out in Southern California. And check back with Culture Monster next week for reviews of Dudamel's August appearances at the Hollywood Bowl — he'll conduct a performance of Bizet's "Carmen" on Sunday, followed by concerts Tuesday and Thursday.

Maestro Dudamel,

We first saw you on PBS and were mesmerized! What a gift you have and are to the world. My son-in-law Jorge Ortega, is from Caracas! You and he have so many mannerisms alike and you make us smile. We love the work of El Sistema and pray it continues to grow around the world! We saw your first theater concert Jan. 6th, and enjoyed being up close and personal with you and the orchestra members who are marvelous. I played oboe and violin in school, so I watch them very closely. I am happy for your first child and pray God's best for him and you with Eloisa in parenting. Life is great! Barb Sabol, Colo.
