Since leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ on ABC, T.R. Knight has devoted himself increasingly to the stage. In 2009, he starred in a production of the dark musical ‘Parade’ at the Mark Taper Forum, directed by Rob Ashford. Now the Emmy-nominated actor is set to return to Broadway in David Mamet’s ‘A Life in the Theatre.’

Knight will star alongside Patrick Stewart in the 1977 Mamet drama, which has never been performed on Broadway before. The production, which will run at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, is expected to begin previews in September, with an official opening day in October.

Neil Pepe will direct the production, having staged the Broadway revival of Mamet’s ‘Speed-the-Plow’ in 2008. Tony-winner (and past Mamet collaborator) Santo Loquasto will design the sets.

‘A Life in the Theatre’ follows the relationship between a mature stage actor (Stewart) and a young newcomer (Knight) as their professional bond is tested by a series of on-stage and off-stage incidents. The play had its world premiere at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre in 1977 before running off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre that same year.

This will be the seventh Mamet play to run on Broadway in just five years. This past season, Mamet had ‘Race’ and ‘Oleanna’ running on Broadway.

Knight’s previous Broadway credits include ‘Noises Off’ in 2001 and ‘Tartuffe’ in 2003. He has also performed at regional theaters including the Guthrie Theatre in his home town of Minneapolis.
