Diller Scofidio + Renfro appears to have inside track to design Broad's art museum
The New York firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, which designed Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art, appears to be the front-runner in the competition to design the art museum that Eli Broad wants to build on Bunker Hill in downtown L.A.
Several sources said Monday that the billionaire philanthropist had indicated he favors the firm after hearing pitches late last month from six of the leading architecture offices in the world.
But nothing has been finalized, not least because Broad hasn't locked in the site yet. Civic leaders haven't approved the leasing deal he has proposed, and officially he's still saying that Santa Monica is in the running for the museum that would house his impressive art collection.
