A Noise Within sets groundbreaking for new Pasadena home; announces last season in Glendale digs

June 29, 2010 |  5:11 pm

ANoiseWithin While A Noise Within builds itself a new, 300-seat home in Pasadena over the coming year, starting with a groundbreaking scheduled for July 20, its 20th and final season in Glendale will end by breaking new artistic ground: "The Chairs" (April 9-May 21, 2011), the last show opening in 2010-11, will be the classic stage company's first production of a play by the Romanian-French absurdist playwright, Eugene Ionesco.

Other than "The Chairs," first produced in 1952, and a likely but not yet definite staging of a Tennessee Williams play (March 19-May 28, 2011), the season will offer a bunch of Brits.

The shows are Shakespeare's "Measure for Measure" (Sept. 25-Dec. 5) and "The Comedy of Errors" (March 5-May 14, 2011), Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit" (Oct. 9-Dec. 17), a new adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel, "Great Expectations" (Oct. 30-Dec. 19), and an encore for Michael Frayn's backstage farce, "Noises Off" (Jan. 21-30, 2011), which was staged last fall.

The finale in the leased Masonic Temple that has been the company's home will be "A Noise Within: A Retrospective" (June 3-5, 2011), a greatest hits compilation of scenes from past productions, likely presented as staged readings. A Noise Within expects to open its 33,000 square foot new home in the fall of 2011.

ANoiseWithinInterior Also on the agenda before then is completing fundraising for the new theater at 3360 East Foothill Boulevard, which is part of a mixed-use development at the site of the Stuart Pharmaceutical building, a 1958 mid-century modern structure designed by architect Edward Durrell Stone.

The 33,000-square-foot theater is budgeted at $13.3 million, with $10.1 million raised so far. It will be a new addition to the site, rising behind a historic latticed, screen-like structure.
