In classic “Ring” tradition, two guests -- David Gallup and Peter Adams -- turned up in Viking helmets for last week’s premiere of ‘Light of the Valkyries,’ the newest planetarium show at the Griffith Observatory.

Set to the music of Richard Wagner’s four-opera “Ring’ cycle, the premiere was part of the Griffith Observatory’s 75th-birthday gala and Ring Festival L.A., a countywide celebration of the opera cycle, which the Los Angeles Opera will present three times beginning May 29.

Like the monumental opera, the new planetarium show explores ancient Nordic myths involving the Valkyries, once believed to be warrior spirits embodied by the northern lights.

More than 400 guests came to the birthday gala and new planetarium show, among them actors Edward James Olmos and John Ho. The “Light of the Valkyries” is shown twice nightly, Tuesday through Sunday, at the observatory’s Samuel Oschin Planetarium.

Look for the full story of the celebration here and in “Scene & Heard” in Sunday’s Image section.
