Catching up with Plácido Domingo
Starting Sunday, Plácido Domingo will perform in Los Angeles Opera's production of "Die Walküre," the second chapter in Wagner's "Ring" cycle that the company is presenting for the first time in its entirety.
It's the latest in a string of appearances that Domingo is making just a few months after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous polyp from his colon. The 69-year-old singer recently starred in "Simon Boccanegra" at La Scala in Milan, performed in a zarzuela concert in Qatar and conducted another concert at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica.
Domingo spoke to the Wall Street Journal in an article published Wednesday on the newspaper's website. (The story is written by frequent Times contributor David Mermelstein.) In the article, the Spanish tenor discussed his roles as director of the L.A. Opera and Washington National Opera, as well as rumors that he might be considering retiring from the stage.
The singer also revealed in the article that he tried to get Australian film director Baz Luhrmann to direct the "Ring" in L.A., but the filmmaker was too busy with movie projects.
The article references the recent controversy at L.A. Opera after two of the lead singers in the "Ring" cycle criticized the Achim Freyer production for being artistically flawed and dangerous for performers.
