Neil Patrick Harris to direct ‘Rent’ at the Hollywood Bowl

Expanding his already impressive musical theater credentials, Neil Patrick Harris has signed on to direct this summer’s production of ‘Rent’ at the Hollywood Bowl that will run Aug. 6-8.
Harris, who currently stars in the CBS series ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ performed in ‘Rent’ in the role of Mark Cohen in 1997 at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles and a national tour of the Tony-winning musical.
Joining Harris for the Hollywood Bowl production will be Tim Weil, who served as musical supervisor and conductor for ‘Rent’ on Broadway. Weil will take on the job of musical director for the Bowl’s fully staged production, according to the L.A. Philharmonic.
This marks the first time that Harris has directed a musical theater production, said the L.A. Philharmonic. His stage acting credentials include ‘Assassins’ on Broadway as well as a number of Southern California productions such as Arthur Miller’s ‘All My Sons’ at the Geffen Playhouse; ‘The Paris Letter’ at the Kirk Douglas Theatre; and the ‘Luck, Pluck and Virtue’ at the La Jolla Playhouse.
Recent musical productions at the Bowl include ‘Guys and Dolls’ in 2009 and ‘Les Miserables’ in 2008.
On screens both large and small, Harris has brought his musical talent to a recent episode of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and the online hit ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.’
