Orange County’s Philharmonic Society sets Dudamel, Japan festival for 2010-11 season

A festival of Japanese arts and culture, plus appearances by Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, are among the highlights of the Philharmonic Society‘s 2010-11 season in Orange County.
The Society said today that the season will also include visits from the Vienna Philharmonic, the Dresden Staatskapelle Orchestra and the Kronos Quartet.
The season will kick off with a concert at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall on Oct. 27. The concert will feature the Dresden Staatskapelle Orchestra led by conductor Fabio Luisi in a program set to include Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.
JapanOC, a new festival with Carnegie Hall exploring Japan’s arts and culture, is scheduled to kick off in the fall of 2010,with most events at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The series marks the second collaboration between the Society and Carnegie after last fall’s ‘Ancient Paths, Modern Voices’ festival. The west coast version of the festival begins with a performance by the Butoh dance troupe Sankai Juku on Oct. 30 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.
Other JapanOC performances include a March 9, 2011 recital by violin superstar Midori at the Samueli Theatre and a concert of traditional Japanese music on March 19 at the same location.
The festival will also include tributes to artist Isamu Noguchi and composer Tōru Takemitsu. Dates for these events will be announced later.
On Nov. 4, the Venice Baroque Orchestra will perform Vivaldi’s ‘The Four Seasons’ plus a new piece composed by Philip Glass titled ‘Violin Concerto No. 2 (The American Four Seasons).’ The concert at the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall will feature violin soloist Robert McDuffie, for whom Glass wrote the piece.
Conductor Semyon Bychkov will lead the Vienna Philharmonic in a March 3, 2011 concert featuring Mahler’s Symphony No. 6.
The L.A. Philharmonic will play for the first time in Orange County with Gustavo Dudamel as music director on March 5, 2011. The concert is planned to include Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 with additional works to be announced later.
The Philharmonic of Poland will make its Orange County debut on March 15, 2011 with conductor Boguslaw Dawidow. The program for the concert will be announced on a future date.
Pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque will appear with the Orquesta Nacional de España in a concert on April 15, 2011. The concert will include Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ and Joan Albert Amaragós’ Concerto for Two Pianos.
Les Violons du Roy are set to perform a concert of Baroque arias and other works with tenor Ian Bostridge on April 29, 2011.
As part of the season, the Society will also present a series of chamber music concerts and recitals, including a performance by the Kronos Quartet to honor the 75th birthday of composer Steve Reich. The concert, which will take place on April 6, 2011 at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, features a new work jointly commissioned by the Philharmonic Society and Carnegie Hall.
The series also includes an appearance by the Mutter-Bashmet-Harrell Trio on Nov. 9. The trio is comprised of violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, violist Yuri Bashmet, and cellist Lynn Harrell.
