Dismay (and some optimism) from Pasadena Playhouse devotees

January 31, 2010 |  7:00 am

Pasadena

Friday evening a subdued crowd gathered at the Pasadena Playhouse for a performance of its current production, "Camelot."

In interviews in the Playhouse's historic and picturesque courtyard, some of them expressed disbelief and dismay at the news that the theater company has decided to close its doors Feb. 7 as a result of financial hardship.

I am an avid theater goer and just about never went to the nearby Pasadena Playhouse, and every time I went I was sorry. The theater as run by Sheldon Epps seemed to want to be all things to all suburban middle-brow tastes. The seasons were bland or uninteresting and what I did manage to see there was mostly second rate in terms of direction and acting.

Look no further then to South Coast Repertory theater in Orange County for an even more conservative suburban crowd where the theater directors do not just pander to their audiences, but offer interesting and well done fare that will attract a theater goer to drive an hour through traffic.
