Promoters of Broadway’s ‘American Idiot’ clearly know their target audience. On Sunday, the cast of the musical, which opens this year at New York’s St. James Theater, will perform live at the Grammy Awards ceremony, which will be held at the Staples Center in downtown L.A.

Featuring music by the band Green Day, ‘American Idiot’ opened at Berkeley Repertory last fall. Organizers announced today that the Broadway run, set to officially open April 20, will feature a cast including many of the principal actors from the Berkeley run -- Tony winner John Gallagher Jr., Rebecca Naomi Jones, Tony Vincent, Mary Faber, Christina Sajous and Michael Esper.

In addition, the Broadway cast will feature Tony nominee Stark Sands, who most recently appeared in La Jolla Playhouse’s production of ‘Bonnie and Clyde.’

Tony winner Michael Mayer, who staged the Berkeley Rep production, also will direct the Broadway version of the show. The production features music from Green Day’s album ‘American Idiot.’

Promoters said today that cast members will perform the song ’21 Guns,’ along with Green Day, at the Grammy Awards ceremony, which airs Sunday on CBS.
