Her career now into its fourth decade, Lily Tomlin certainly deserves some sort of award for showbiz longevity.

Whether on stage or screen, the actress-comedian seldom seems to be out of work. People of a certain age may remember her brilliantly subtle performance in Robert Altman's 1975 film "Nashville." Younger audiences probably know her best from her expletive-laden tirade against David O. Russell on the set of "I Heart Huckabees," which catapulted her into YouTube stardom in 2007.

The one constant in Tomlin's hugely varied career has been her series of one-woman stage shows, which have taken on a number of incarnations and titles throughout the years. The latest version will tour the country in 2010 and will make two stops in Southern California, though not in Los Angeles.

"An Evening With Lily Tomlin" is scheduled to play at San Diego's Balboa Theater on Thursday, Jan. 28,  and at Palm Desert's McCallum Theater from Jan. 29-31.

The tour will also take Tomlin to venues in cities including Denver, Boston and Chicago.

A press representative said that the show would include more than a dozen of Tomlin's familiar stage characters. The actress will also answer questions that audience members can leave in the lobby before the show.

Tomlin likes to keep her shows up-to-date with references to current events, according to the actress' spokesperson. She also tends to incorporate references to the city in which she is performing.

Among Tomlin's notable stage personae are Ernestine, the telephone operator; Edith Ann, a precocious pre-teen; and Pervis Hawkins, a male R&B singer.

Never far from television screens, Tomlin recently signed on for a role in the next season of FX's "Damages." The new season is set to begin airing in January.

Tomlin recently performed her show "Not Playing With a Full Deck" this fall at the Hollywood Theatre at the MGM Grand Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas.
