Rolando Villazon says in online video that his voice is back

November 5, 2009 |  1:31 pm

Tenor Rolando Villazón was supposed to open the current season at Los Angeles Opera in Donizetti's "The Elixir of Love," but in April, he said surgery for a cyst on his vocal cords meant that he would have to cancel his appearances for the remainder of the year.

In a new video that was posted on his official website last month and has since been making the rounds on YouTube, Villazón declares that his surgery was a success and even provides a brief vocal demonstration for his fans.

"My voice is back!" he says in the video.

"I am very happy to inform all of you that I am currently singing and I am just polishing little details to be able to come back as soon as possible next year to the stage."

He added that he would soon be posting his calendar for 2010 appearances. The tenor had been scheduled to appear in Mozart's "Idomeneo" in Paris and Massenet's "Manon" in London, among other performances. But it's not clear whether he will keep some or any of those engagements.

At the end of the video, Villazón sings a very operatic "Ciao!" before leaping out of his chair.

He returned to operatic stage last month (March 2010). It was at the Vienna Staatsoper, as Nemorino in Donizetti's "L'elisir d'amore" ("The Elixir of Love").
