Lang Lang to make 'secret' weekend appearance in Santa Monica

Can't afford to buy tickets to see Lang Lang in concert? Here's an opportunity to catch the superstar classical pianist for free.

Culture Monster has learned that Lang Lang is scheduled to make a brief, "secret" appearance this weekend in Santa Monica where he will perform an improvisational set of music. He's set to play in the lobby of the Shutters on the Beach hotel at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.

The performance will be brief -- about 20 minutes -- but it will be free. The official word is that only VIP guests and those staying at the hotel are invited to the performance. But we hear from people close to the hotel that anyone who happens to be passing through the lobby at the time will be able to catch the pianist in action.

In case you were wondering, Shutters on the Beach isn't paying Lang Lang for the performance, according to a publicist. Rather, the musician agreed to do it to show his appreciation for the hotel, which is said to be his favorite while staying in Southern California.

As for the nature of the performance, Culture Monster could only ascertain that it will be a "jam session," featuring a blend of different musical genres.

Earlier this week, Lang Lang performed in Costa Mesa at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. The concert, titled "Lang Lang and Friends," was part of an ongoing festival devoted to Chinese culture.
