Green Day musical ‘American Idiot’ appears to be heading to Broadway

It always seemed inevitable that the Green Day musical ‘American Idiot’ would end up on Broadway. Packed with Tony-winning talent and possessing a ready-made fan base, the high-profile production is a marketing slam-dunk with blockbuster potential.
Monday afternoon, the inevitable was confirmed. Producers of the show -- playing at Berkeley Repertory through Sunday -- have put out a casting notice in New York, and promoters said that ‘American Idiot’ is indeed coming to Broadway, according to Playbill.
A spokesman confirmed to the website that the show has ‘a Broadway future’ but did not specify an opening date or theater.
Berkeley Repertory did not immediately respond to Culture Monster’s request for an interview.
‘American Idiot’ shares much of the same talent as 2006’s ‘Spring Awakening’: producers Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman, director Michael Mayer and actor John Gallagher Jr.
There’s a possibility that ‘American Idiot’ will land on Broadway during the current season, most likely in the late winter or spring 2010 in time for the Tony Awards.
In his review of the Berkeley Rep production, Times theater critic Charles McNulty wrote that the musical is a ‘visually mesmerizing, dramatically sketchy production’ that brings together ‘latter-day mainstream punk with cutting-edge musical theater craft.’
He added: ‘If [‘American Idiot’] doesn’t spin an entirely satisfying yarn, its roar is still irresistible, even when the object of protest remains elusive.’
