Glenn Beck's '9-12' logo based on communist and socialist designs

September 13, 2009 | 10:30 am

Taxpayer March Ever since Glenn Beck took to the Fox television airwaves recently to offer a bizarre reading of the art commissioned 70 years ago for New York's Rockefeller Center, I've been puzzled by the graphic design element of his 9-12 Project. The logo (pictured) for his affiliated groups' rally in Washington, D.C., this weekend derives from century-old communist, socialist and other left-wing designs.

Those were the motifs he railed against in his Rockefeller rant.

For the logo, three raised and clenched red fists are superimposed over the U.S. Capitol. Obviously the bloody fist represents the tea-baggers' themes of unity and resistance.

But do Beck; the corporate-sponsored astro-turf group, FreedomWorks, headed by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-Texas); the Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights; the private-property group, the National Assn. of Rural Landowners; and the rest of the march sponsors know the symbol's origins?

Unity and resistance are what the fist represented in 1917, when it was first employed by the Industrial Workers of the World, a union organization founded by socialists. And in the 1940s, when it stood  for various nations' communist party organizations.

Fist Progressive Labor Party That's also what it meant when it was revived in the 1960s, appearing as a symbol for the SDS, as well as anti-war and feminist movements. It was the basis for the black-power salute given by John Carlos and Tommie Smith at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. And today, it's the symbol for the Progressive Labor Party (pictured), a political outfit whose website says it "fights to smash capitalism."

Turnout for the 9-12 Project's Saturday march on Washington was a bust; 30,000 protesters signed up in advance (MSNBC reporter David Shuster tweeted that D.C. park police called that figure "generous"). But even if three times that many actually showed up, the number would fall far short of the hundreds of thousands (and even millions) claimed to be planning to attend. Even in that reduced crowd, however, surely someone recognized how odd the right-wing gathering's left-wing logo was.

Maybe Beck will explain. Sort of.

Is this the same Christopher Knight from the Brady Bunch? Is this guy serious? Talk about a willing suspension of disbelief. The left is worried and they're resorting to logo nonsense now. Not surprising.

I find it ironic (and a huge stretch or reach) for Mr. Knight to claim Beck's 9-12 logo is based on socialist artwork. He obviously doesn't watch Beck, whose main point is that he's fighting a trend toward socialism. A huge reach, Christopher, a huge reach.

30,000? LOL. I see Chrissy can't count either. Photos and live video from CNN don't lie. Hundreds of thousands easily. Keep living in denial Chrissy.

30,000... a generous estimate?

Hahaha!

I was at the rally. I have video and still pictures that prove otherwise. Let's wait until Monday, when the numbers are reported from the city.

Nice try, tho.

There are some of you that consider these people to be harmless idiots. The problem is that if you surround a harmless idiot with enough propaganda that nurtures racism, a fear of foreign ideas, and the premise that Obama is an illegal immigrant, you are going to have one of these whackos pick up a sniper rifle. Beck and his buddies have been framing him as the next Hitler (explicitly) and all but inviting people to take him out. I don't think they are harmless at all. Beck needs to stop throwing gasoline around or he's going to get politicians killed. No joke.

"Turnout was a bust"??

Only someone who wasn't there could possibly say something so untrue, and so foolish.

Turnout was incredible, way beyond what the organizers or the city expected... or what obsolete, money-losing dinosaur media companies like the LA Times are reporting.

Your desperation is showing, lefties.

Grow up and investigate something truthful, like Acorn or something.

Glenn Beck is such an idiot... the perfect leader for his idiot teabagger sheep.

Mockery? Judging from the blog entry, we're to conclude he's not so clever.

The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW or "Wobblies") were not socialists. They were anarchists.

LA Slimes -- YOU LIE! Knight -- YOU LIE!

I stopped reading at "bust, crowd size=30,000". The crowd sizes was closer to 300,000, you commie dopes.

"corporate sponsored astroturf group"?

What do you call the organized union thugs who were rolled out in town halls? I guess they were all spontaneous people who just happened to wear the same shirts that day.

I just saw an ad for obamacare on the football game by the aarp. What are they? Are they a special interest or was that ad a spontaneous expression that some of their members just drew up on the back of a napkin somewhere? aarp not only is an "astroturf" group, they are liars because they try to tell their members they don't support obamacare while they are running millions of dollars for ads for it. Libs lie, what a shock.

I guess we conservatives should take this as a compliment considering we're so gosh-darn ignorant.

The uber-enlightened, compassionate, tolerant, open-minded, peace loving intellects on the left are acting rather grumpy these days. It's not very attractive if I do say so myself. I'm beginning to think they're really none of these things.

A bust??????30,000??????? ROFLOL... did you even take a minute to view the video of the crowd there yesterday?????? God you people are desperate to ignore what is going on under your noses... oh, and re: Beck's logo... clearly you don't watch his program, if you did you would understand the logo.

$682,370,172,924 and counting... where were you?

Dear Christopher,

You have wa-a-a-ay too much time on your hands.

Oh dear. I hear crickets. The lemmings must have all run to HuffPo for some more talking points.

The logo is from FreedomWorks, not Glenn Beck. If your going to cover an issue, at least do it right. The 9/12 Project logo is a snake.

OBAMA IS NOT A SOCIALIST HE IS A HARVARD EDUCATED LAWYER AND A MEMBER OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF AMERICA.

QUIT MAKING STUFF UP ABOUT HIM.

It is not unusual for right wing populists to copy symbols associated and originating with the political left. Those who have read "Mein Kampf" will recognize the similarity between Beck's and Hitler's propaganda methods. Hitler also expropriated symbols of the political left both to attract the alienated but naive workers who had gravitated to the communists and to identify (and eliminate) the more sophisticated of their ranks-

"The fact that we had chosen red as the colour for our posters sufficed to attract them to our meetings. The ordinary bourgeoisie were very shocked to see that, we had also chosen the symbolic red of Bolshevism and they regarded this as something ambiguously significant. The suspicion was whispered in German Nationalist circles that we also were merely another variety of Marxism, perhaps even Marxists suitably disguised, or better still, Socialists. The actual difference between Socialism and Marxism still remains a mystery to these people up to this day. The charge of Marxism was conclusively proved when it was discovered that at our meetings we deliberately substituted the words 'Fellow-countrymen and Women' for 'Ladies and Gentlemen' and addressed each other as 'Party Comrade'. We used to roar with laughter at these silly faint-hearted bourgeoisie and their efforts to puzzle out our origin, our intentions and our aims.

We chose red for our posters after particular and careful deliberation, our intention being to irritate the Left, so as to arouse their attention and tempt them to come to our meetings – if only in order to break them up – so that in this way we got a chance of talking to the people. "

-Mein Kampf by Adolph Hitler

So as you see, Beck is emulating one of the greatest propagandists who ever lived. And Beck is on television. Think of what Hitler could have "accomplished" a nightly television show. I doubt that Beck has ever read a book, much less "Mein Kampf", but his instincts are on the money as to rousing the rabble.
