Glenn Beck's '9-12' logo based on communist and socialist designs

September 13, 2009 | 10:30 am

Taxpayer March Ever since Glenn Beck took to the Fox television airwaves recently to offer a bizarre reading of the art commissioned 70 years ago for New York's Rockefeller Center, I've been puzzled by the graphic design element of his 9-12 Project. The logo (pictured) for his affiliated groups' rally in Washington, D.C., this weekend derives from century-old communist, socialist and other left-wing designs.

Those were the motifs he railed against in his Rockefeller rant.

For the logo, three raised and clenched red fists are superimposed over the U.S. Capitol. Obviously the bloody fist represents the tea-baggers' themes of unity and resistance.

But do Beck; the corporate-sponsored astro-turf group, FreedomWorks, headed by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-Texas); the Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights; the private-property group, the National Assn. of Rural Landowners; and the rest of the march sponsors know the symbol's origins?

Unity and resistance are what the fist represented in 1917, when it was first employed by the Industrial Workers of the World, a union organization founded by socialists. And in the 1940s, when it stood  for various nations' communist party organizations.

Fist Progressive Labor Party That's also what it meant when it was revived in the 1960s, appearing as a symbol for the SDS, as well as anti-war and feminist movements. It was the basis for the black-power salute given by John Carlos and Tommie Smith at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. And today, it's the symbol for the Progressive Labor Party (pictured), a political outfit whose website says it "fights to smash capitalism."

Turnout for the 9-12 Project's Saturday march on Washington was a bust; 30,000 protesters signed up in advance (MSNBC reporter David Shuster tweeted that D.C. park police called that figure "generous"). But even if three times that many actually showed up, the number would fall far short of the hundreds of thousands (and even millions) claimed to be planning to attend. Even in that reduced crowd, however, surely someone recognized how odd the right-wing gathering's left-wing logo was.

Maybe Beck will explain. Sort of.

The guy who designed this logo is either a wise-ass saboteur who gave them a taste of their own snake oil, or just another imbecile in the crowd caught in the impossible terrain of supposed correctness left to roam by the republicans.

If you remember what the conservatives did to Bill Clinton, it's really easy to understand what they are doing to Obama.

They said ALL the same things about Bill Clinton: Communist, Nazi, Murderer, Gun Grabber, Foreign Agent, Atheist, etc.

The two main differences are: 1) In the 1990s, the GOP focused chiefly on family values. But with so many in their party suffering from their own infidelities and perversions... they have backed away from this line of attack.

2) The intensity of the attacks against Obama are much stronger, and the GOP have committed a number of historical "firsts" in recent weeks (heckling the president and refusing him the opportunity to speak to students). This is hard to explain. One explanation is the racial angle, and this theory is supported by the strong (and documented) rise in membership in white supremacist organizations. The second angle is the internet, which simply hastens and intensifies partisan speech in a way that was not possible during the Clinton years. With FOX on hand to pick up internet rumors and broadcast them, the conservative whisper campaigns end up becoming "respectable" in some corners of the population.

In any case, it is disturbing that Obama is being attacked with such intensity, and by so many contradictory angles. And, Glenn Beck is just willing to amplify views, no matter how unsettling--he will pick up arguments developed by anti-semitic groups like the LaRouche cult, he will pick up arguments by theocratic followers of Rushdooney, he will give airtime to theories coming out of the white supremacist movement--if it is anti-Obama, he is all for it. But, it really is only a matter of time before things get too hot, even for Fox and Glenn Beck. It took a few years for the violence to materialize under Clinton. It will happen much more quickly, now.

I just hope and pray that conservatives will walk back from the brink BEFORE someone does something horrible to our country.

If there is a bright side to the sad turn of the conservative movement it is that the bulk of the country's younger population tends to be more liberal.

I think what we will see is that the conservative base will solidify around their paranoid fringe to try to achieve short term gains.

They will win some political battles (see, for instance, how US distributors refuse to carry the award-winning biopic about Charles Darwin, for fear that their theatres will be targeted... see, also, the success of Prop. 8 in California).

But, over the long term, they are going to find themselves much more easier to marginalize. The more publicity Glenn Beck gives to extremists, the harder it will be for the GOP to re-brand itself as a "big tent" party that has room for people of different cultures, religions, beliefs, etc. Democrats even have the opportunity here to co-opt moderate Republican ideas, as they have done already.

So, as long as the government can prevent any catastrophic OKC-style events by conservatives... the Tea Party movement, for all its paranoia and irrationality, might actually be a good thing, in that it will, over time, diminish the fortunes of the GOP in general.

All the wingers crying about "big government" were mysteriously silent when Bush expanded government powers. There weren't any marches or chants of "power to the people" then.

Admit it, you guys--you're just angry that a Democrat was elected president.

As for the size of the crowd, the DC FD estimated 75,000, contrary to your blogged hearsay. Independent researchers claimed 1.5 million. The European press widely reported 1.7M people.

Anyone watching the live aerial shot could see there were more people there than on January 20.

If you want to talk about "busts" let's talk about the so-called "Million Man March" that wasn't any such thing. Is that racist, too, cowards?

Spreading misinformation about protestors won't help you at the ballot box. If anything, media lies will hasten the coming "change." Believe it.

Wow, blip, so many words, but nothing to say. Just a blip on the screen.

Bush is the devil, Bush is a liar, Bush is a murderer, Bush is a Fascist, Bush hates black people, Bush is a Nazi, Bush is responsible for 9/11, and on and on. Liberals love to point to OKC style events, but don't bother to add and balance it with Bill Ayers type events. There are psychos with all political views. Hypocrites!

Trying to find logic in the actions of a GOP'er is like trying to understand the thinking of a 13 year old. Nobody ever said they were smart.

How come the only ones screeching "racism" are the ones that voted for Obama? Did we call you racists when you screamed profanity at Bush? If you don't want racism used, don't bring it up you idiots!!
I did not vote for Obama because he is too entrenched in bed with criminals. KNOWN CRIMINALS!! WAKE UP AND SMELL THE STENCH FROM HIS FRIENDS.

Reaching a bit, ACORN not big enough a story?

anyone that would support Glenn Beck and support this logo doesn't know history and uses such images as a place of fear. This lacks complete intelligence which is the norm on the Glenn Beck show. When Beck and the other neanderthals at Fox News say they want their America back. It's strange how angry white men scream they want their America back.
Make you think what other fear mongering that come up.
Where are the smart people screaming how dumb this all is??

Glenn Beck at leasts reports what is going on, unlike the MSM. They are so intrenched with the Obama camp, they won't breathe unless the big O says OK. Maureen Dowd is a classic example of "Newsperson". Her reporting of what Joe Wilson said was "You Lie, Boy". I heard what Joe said many many times, and not once did I hear "Boy". Guess who's racist now? Guess who brings up racism? Not the GOP. Only the Left-wing libs who are scared to death their grip on the WH is going down the tubes. When sane people inhabit the WH again, you can all thank us who work to free our country from a little-known Chicago kid who couldn't run a lemonade stand, but claims he can run the country. Yes, he can - he is running it into the ground faster than a bullet train. Hold on tight America, we are in the middle of a ride that could end up killing us all because of his ties to Muslim terrorists, and domestic terrorists.
My opinion and I state it proudly.

Can you tell me where I can find Glenn Beck's logo, other than in your Newspaper? I've been following his 9-12 project and this is not his logo.

glen beck is for old white people with dimensia

As we know, all designers are pinko commies. And Beck had to hire a designer to do the logo -- because Beck figured his crayon drawings wouldn't look very professional. So... it's not Beck's fault, he was set up by the pinko commie that did the design. Duh. Get with it people, nobody is safe, even the great mental giant Glenn Beck was duped by subversive commie designers! We're DOOMED!

We use a Rose in a Clenched Fist in France

Having been a socialist for over 50 years both in the United States and France I am very much a supporter of Labor and Socialism. As far as the Reich Wing goes, perhaps one day they will realize that their Jesus was a Socialist. But then, they may be just too brain dead or greedy, or both to realize that salient fact.

Just this old Chief's 2 cents

Glenn Beck is a guru of greed, intolerance and fear. Pass it on.

This is what happens when you either rewrite history or choose to ignore it.

I'm ashamed. He should have taken as his inspiration the thematic art that covers the walls of his house -- Swastikas of every size and color!!
