Save Film at LACMA channels Bob Dylan in video short

Culture Monster doesn’t usually like to single out promotional videos from special interest groups, but over the weekend we received one from Save Film at LACMA that grabbed our attention for its creativity.

Save Film at LACMA, a vocal group of about 10 L.A. film buffs, has spent the last week expressing its outrage at LACMA’s decision to kill its weekend film program. Now it has posted a YouTube video, above, inspired by Bob Dylan’s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues.’

On July 28, the museum said it intended to end its 40-year-old film program as a result of financial difficulties and dwindling audiences. Save Film at LACMA launched an online petition and Facebook campaign to save the program and so far has attracted hundreds of online supporters.

LACMA Director Michael Govan said on Friday that donors have begun to step forward in an effort to rescue the film program, but he would not disclose any names or dollar figures.

The 51-second video from Save Film at LACMA appears to have been shot in front of Chris Burden’s ‘Urban Light’ installation that graces the entrance to the museum. Take a look at the video and see if you catch all of the cinephilic references as they fly by on cue cards.
