Michael Jackson, art muse*

June 25, 2009 |  4:06 pm

Koons

While others are remembering Michael Jackson for incomparable contributions to pop music, Culture Monster remembers Jackson as an inspiration to pop artists Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol.

WarholAbove is Koons' "Michael Jackson and Bubbles," which sits in the Broad Contemporary Art Museum at the LACMA. The life-size white porcelain masterpiece of Jackson and his pet chimpanzee is owned by Eli Broad. Last year, Times art critic Christopher Knight dubbed it  "arguably the World's Largest Knickknack."

At left is Warhol's 1984 "Michael Jackson," created as a cover for Time magazine. *[UPDATED: A previous Mjversion of this post incorrectly stated that the Warhol work was from 1974.]

And that's not all. For more images of artworks inspired by the King of Pop, click on the photo gallery at right.

MASTERPIECE?! LOL!!!!!!!

Art Collegia Delenda Est

As Hemingway said, a such and such alive is a such and such dead.
Yet also, the bell tolls for thee. Well, he borrowed it actually.
Too bad he died, but he did bring it on himself, i will save my pity for those who never had a chance or are young and being killed and maimed and abused every day. He was the abuser.

He had more than a few of the deadly sins, that the fool Nauman put in neon lights, just where the vain like em. Bet Michael had a copy of it at home. Amusing the decadently rich is contemporary arts sole purpose. And in Michaels case, the masses perfect jester. For we have been marketed too, the opium of the people, or is that bread? hmmm.
