Architect magazine’s ranking of the top 100 U.S. firms is out, and nine firms from Southern California made the list.

The rankings are based on three criteria: profitability (revenue per employee, based on 2008 gross revenue), sustainability (with variables such as green policies) and design quality (based on awards in 2008).

‘Size is just one, not-terribly-revealing measure of an architecture firm,’ wrote the magazine. As a result, the names on the list range from internationally recognized brand names to smaller boutique firms.

Here are the SoCal-based firms that placed on this year’s ranking:

#12 -- CO Architects (Los Angeles)

#14 -- RBB Architects (Los Angeles)

#28 -- A.C. Martin Partners (Los Angeles)

#46 -- KTGY Group (Irvine)

#48 -- The Jerde Partnership (Venice)
