At 50, Esa-Pekka Salonen is still astonishingly youthful, but time seems to be catching up with the outgoing music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Salonen has canceled his three scheduled concerts with the New York Philharmonic this month because of problems with his back.

‘Salonen was moving boxes recently when he threw out his back,’ according to a spokeswoman for the L.A. Philharmonic.

He will be replaced by David Zinman for all three concerts at Avery Fisher Hall on May 16-18.

The program originally featured Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra. Those pieces have been replaced with Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Mussorgsky’s ‘Night on Bald Mountain,’ respectively.

The scheduled performances of Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5 remain unchanged.

Violinst Christian Tetzlaff is still set to perform his scheduled two concerts.
