What led to Krystian Zimerman's surprising comments, walkouts

April 28, 2009 |  6:03 am

Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman, who is widely admired for his virtuosic performances and who famously tours with his own custom-altered Steinway, created a furor at Disney Hall on Sunday night when he stopped his recital to announce that this would be his last American appearance -- in protest of the nation's military policies overseas.

In a low voice that could not be heard throughout the auditorium, Zimerman, universally considered among the world's finest pianists, made reference to Guantanamo Bay and U.S. military policies toward Poland.

Zimerman "Get your hands off my country," he said.

Then he turned to the piano and played Szymanowski's "Variations on a Polish Folk Theme" with such passion and intensity that the stunned audience gave him multiple ovations.

Earlier, about 30 or 40 people in the audience had walked out after Zimerman's declaration, some shouting obscenities.

"Yes," the pianist, known in Poland as "King Krystian the Glorious," answered, "some people, when they hear the word military, start marching."

Zimerman then said that America has far finer exports than its military -- and he thanked those who supported democracy. He left the stage without further comment and was unavailable Monday.

His manager, Mary Pat Buerkle, told the Associated Press on Monday that Zimerman has talked for the last couple of years about not coming back to the United States "for a while. . . . I don't think it's appropriate to say it's all political."

Zimerman has had problems in the United States in recent years, but many in the classical music world thought they were logistical.

Just a week ago, before an appearance in Seattle, Zimerman expressed frustration about the hassle and expense of touring the U.S. with his piano.

Shortly after Sept. 11, his instrument was confiscated at JFK Airport when he landed in New York to give a recital at Carnegie Hall. Thinking the glue smelled funny, the Transportation Security Administration decided to take no chances and destroyed the piano. Since then he has shipped his pianos in parts, which he reassembles by hand after he lands. To get from city to city within the U.S., he hires a driver to take the shell of the piano, and he drives another car that holds the precious custom-designed keys and hammers.

Lately, he'd seemed pleased with the direction the United States has taken. During a performance Friday at Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall, he delighted his Bay Area audience by making sly reference to his approval of Barack Obama in the White House.

But by the time he drove his piano to Los Angeles, Zimerman's mood appeared to have darkened. His remarks, which some in the audience characterized as angry, were the talk of Los Angeles' classical music world and its small Polish community Monday.

Deborah Borda, president of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, said that while some patrons were taken aback by Zimerman's comments, she did not believe it would affect attendance or fundraising.

"It was very clear he was speaking for himself," she said. "We obviously can't censor. We believe in freedom of expression. We don't use a hook to drag people off the stage."

In a spirited range of comments on Culture Monster, many praised Zimerman and others said the stage was no place for divisive political speech. "Go Zimerman, and take the Dixie Chicks with you," said one post, referring to the country music group that in 2003 created a ruckus when a member said they were ashamed President Bush was from Texas.

Others noted that though classical music culture in the United States is among the least overtly political of enclaves, Poland has a long tradition of mixing the political and the musical. Composer and pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski was Poland's third prime minister and is revered in Poland the way the Founding Fathers are here.

"There is a tradition of Polish pianists being in the middle of political events," said Marek Zebrowski, director of the Polish Music Center at USC.

Though Poland gets comparatively little attention in the U.S., American policy recently has been a hot-button issue in Poland. Poles were upset about allegations that the CIA held suspected Al Qaeda militants in secret prisons in Poland. A Polish newspaper mockingly referred to the country as "the 51st state." Also controversial was a Bush administration proposal to put missile defense facilities there.

Sumi Hahn, a Seattle journalist who interviewed Zimerman earlier this month, said she was not surprised to hear of his outburst. She said he told her that he had "very mixed feelings now about America."

In the past five years," she quoted him as saying, "something happened here that changed the world: a war based on lies. . . . So much damage was done worldwide ... and Americans are so unaware."

On the other hand, Robert Cole, director of Cal Performances in Berkeley, said he was surprised to hear of Zimerman's L.A. comments -- especially because of the lightness that characterized his performance in Berkeley.

Just before playing a Bach partita, Zimerman told his audience it was important to consider the political purpose of a piece of music. Bach, he told his audience, "had made a decision to put his piece in a minor key rather than a major one." Perhaps, he said, according to audience members who were there, he did that because there was a leader Bach didn't like.

Zimerman made an approving reference to Obama and then played the piece, but ended it in a joyful C major instead of amelancholy C minor.

"The audience loved it," said Christina Kellogg, director of public relations at Cal Performances. "His playing was brilliant and they broke into huge applause, and he was clearly pleased that the audience was completely with him."

Cole said he had breakfast with the pianist last week at a music-themed cafe across the street from the campus. Zimerman spoke mainly of how exhausting it was to travel with a Steinway.

"I'm sorry he's not coming back," Cole said. "He reminds me of Don Quixote. He's on a quest for perfection."

Cole added that, from a public relations perspective, it's too bad Zimerman hadn't offered his comments about Bach to Los Angeles and saved his fiery political rhetoric for Berkeley.

"I think he maybe picked the wrong place," he said. "It would have been less of an uproar here."

Uh, excuse me? I would have walked out too, and am a white man from the LBC, home of Snoop Dogg and Sublime, married to a black woman, who Poles cant stand from both of our experiences, they are one of the more racist peoples. Irish too, though it seems to have slowly dissapated with the generations. Try going through Southie a couple of generations ago being black, Polish areas of Chicago too. I have walked in black areas of America from sea to sea with no issue, except from a few a holes and gangbangers, but being a large man who coached basketball, it was easy to diffuse. Show respect, and you will get it. Except to true racists.

Those who have been down for long periods of their history often have inferiority complexes and lash out at those different than themselves. Greeks too. Koreans, hyper senstive folks who are both quick to take afront, and hate on those who live life differently. And Poles have a lng history of dislike of Jews, if not extermination policy, til after WWII and many Poles did go after the few returning jews. Though were also many good folks who helped. only 20%of ALL people are truly good, 20% bad, the rest, want to be good, but will always do what is in their self nterest.

Sure this guy has free speech, this is America. As do those who were there listening, not for propaganda, but music. He broke the mood, the feelings they were there for. so had every right as Americans to walk out, and boo if they wished, He had the microphone is all. so controlled the situation to his own advantage. He stole their money, as it was an evening ruined. He simply could have not come and made a statement about America and why he refused a tour.

This has nothing to do with left or right, his ramlbings didnt even make any sense. They were myopic nationalist nonsense. He wasn't being PC, but an a hole. Just another diva, a drama queen. It's all about him, and his precious concerns. There were better ways to handle this, but the lil moody fella wanted to make waves. Get more attention. Wimp. Hell, he is just a piano player, not a creator. Give me Herbie Hancock or Oscar Peterson anyday. Even Horowitz. a REAL musician, and good fellow, went to all of Oscars and Art Tatums concerts when in NYC, as they went to his. True creative artists apprecaite one another.

In America, its often a social thing, appearig to be cool and high in social circles. Forget this guy, he is a dime a dozen. Boycott his recordings and appearances, he obviously wants the money. Hell, forget classical altogether, go over to The Jazz Bekery when they got some good talent, you will hear far better, for far less. With only a hundred or two people Unfortuantely, most of the greats are dead now, but still some excellent talent out there. And Ruth gets em. just cant hob nob in "high" society, art comes first there. Sorry.

To: Joseph Ferreira
I'm from Poland (I came to US 20 years ago), but that doesn't mean I would tolerate this kind of eccentric behavior as Mr. Zimerman presented.
I also agree with Mr. Ferreira that if Mr. Zimerman wanted to protest he should have done this long time ago and not during President Obama administration.
This protest just doesn't make any sense.
Also, I completely don't understand what Mr. Zimerman ment when saying "Get your hands of my country". It just doesn't make any sense. Which country? Poland?

WOW
Donald F. You are very brave man - you know three Poles and You Judge whole nation, You've got guts, man! You know, when i studied at 90's at Wrocław as a law student i've known three americans - every one of them were idiots, but i have not have a nerve, like you, to call all americans idiots. In every nation You will find anti semitic, you will find people who don't like African, Arabs, Korean Chineese, European and so on. Please remind me, events from movie "Mississipi burnig" was about Mississipi in Poland i 60's when we have communism or in States with Your Democracy? And tell me behaviours american soldiers at Afganistan, or Iraq was polish provocations? Oh we know everythig about provocations,'coz we did provocations Gliwice, after that there was no way to Hitler but start the war. And Guantanamo is polish prison. And tell me what americans did to native Americans call "Indians".
Don't tell us about history. When in XVI century all Europe banished Jews they find a place to live on Poland. Poland was called Paradies for Jews. What happaned in 60's last century is a shame, but now its not a big thing to be a Jew. We have got jewish politicians,
And don't try to tell me that Americans Love everyone - for example you Don't Love Poles .

Thre are no jews left in Poland, a few thousand, you ran them all out, what were left after the Nazis were done attempting to exterminate them. its far from just me with these experiences, my wife, a balck woman who lived in Ohio when young, lots of Poles there. And many jews here in LA, many are of Polish, German or Russian descent, and all families have stories. Just as African Americans remember what happened in our not so distant past.

We got our own issues, you got yours. But you are in complete and total denial, and so, continue. The Germans have faced their evil, they were the promised land for jews, and were often high up in society, til the nazis took over. Polish jews were kept seperate, as with in russia, and seldom had any real power in the land. Though they were for one humdred years under Russian, Prussian, and Austro-Hungarian control, they still had local jurisdictions.

Sorry, stop whining about others, you got your own issues. Like I said, no one whines like a Pole, do Czechs, Bulgars, or even Magyars complain like you? No. I work for 80 year old Hungarians and they never whine about the US, they love it. Grow up. Its not all about you. Its like you are a nation of untalented artistes, also whiners.

Actually, our military has done us proud in Iraq, and Afghanistan. Never in the history of warfare has so little happened to a defeated peoples. And we WANT to give them their land back, they dont want us to leave, just stay on their terms, not ours.

Have there been abuses, of course war is chaos. But our discipline and professionalism is unmatched in world history. The serious abuses were by contractors like Blackwater. That was a bad decision by the Bush adminstration, but they got us in a bad situation we could not deal with. Our military is not built as a occupation force. It kicked ass as designed, but Rumsfeld had no plan on how to deal with them after we won the battlefield.

Gates is a great man, heard him speak at my sons Annapolis graduation, and told them all, they served the American people, and that the press was not their enemy. unlike Chaney and his brood of scum.

But you boy was not even talking about that, he was rambling aimlessly, filled with bile, probably got dumped by his boyfriend or something. The possibility of our missiles going in is at YOUR governments request, they want it. And as part of NATO, with huge benefits you do not want to bother to fulfill by treaty requiremnets, just shows you a buncha ungrateful spoiled soft whiny brats. You want your cake and eat it to.

Maybe Marie Antoinette should have been your queen, same fairyland ideas about life, responsibility, and honor. The boy should have just shut his ignorant trap and played, the comparison to our protestors about race and freedom have absolutely nothing to do with what he muttered without intelligence. Just because you play a piano doesnt mean you know anything, just a trained monkey. Put on your show. Or we go and find a new primate. Perhaps a creative one, we ignore our true artists as is. Rather hear Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea play anyday, but not the fusion crap.

We create here, just like with the great French Post Impressionissts, its just not always appreciated by the home crowd, speaks too much truth that many do not want to hear. Charlie Parker and John Coltrane were our Picasso, Miles Davis our Matisse, but they got little respect here. You folks just play other peoples music, like the Chinese and Japanese trained poodles who come over here to loud rich folk applause. Its not creative, its at best interpretive. Like giving more credit to an actor over the playwrite. Sorry, never been an actor the equivalent of Shakespeare. And your guy aint no Chopin. Dump him, there are always more where he came from.

I think that this speech "our military has done us proud in Iraq, and Afghanistan" you coppied from some military propaganda book of Your son. Ok now seriously. Don't forget that we are the part of allies in Iraq and Afganistan. K. Zimerman is one of the world famous piano players, so i think You don't have the right to judge him, like You did. I love music of Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, and i listen to a lot of american music - it's fantastic music.
I've never been in states, and I'm not sure i want to visit this country. Almost every ruin in Poland has longer history then Your the oldest buldings. All You've got to offer is entertainment and army.
I know a few people who lived in states and moved to Poland, after many years. They say that they never exspected to see what they see in Poland. They said that Poles from States are cut off, they are diffrent then Poles in Poland, so maybe you should spend some money for a trip to Poland, see our country on Your own eyes, meet people, and talk with them, you might be suprised.
But you right: "We got our own issues, you got yours"
I don't want Your missiles, and the most of polish public opinion don't want it, but unfortunately our governement do the poilisy and they thik it is for good to our country, I don't think so. You should keep you missiles in Your states, and my govenrment makes me angry his position.
We have about 12000 Jews in Poland now. You wrote: "you ran them all out, what were left after the Nazis were done attempting to exterminate them" Don't forget that Poland was russian satellite (thank's America!!!) You don't think that it could be made without aproove from Moscow, or direct orders perhaps, don't You?

I am Pole from Poland unlike Iwona ie.When I read those comments I feel sorry for those Americans who have to suffer multitude of idiots inhabiting those beautiful shores.Sayin that America spreads democracy in Afganistan and Iraq is a travesty.Sayin there is a difference between Bush and Obama requries immediate medical treatment in mental institution. All your gouverment does in Afganistan is growing drugs and sending it back to US you bunch of morons. All they do in Iraq is nicking their oil and killing their kids. You should be ashamed of yourselves.Mr Zimmerman expressed exactly same things in polite words.MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOU.Do Iwony,2o lat w USA zrobilo Ci szambo z mozgu.

No more needs to be said, you proved my argument, thank you. No go back to your myopic newspapers and worry only about yourselves, while many of us deal wiht the worlds issues. You got your own alright, better finally get to work on them.

art collegia delenda est

Donald Frazell I don't know - your words was for me or Slawomir? Anyway your last words are proof to us that you are Amercian selfish man pumped by propaganda from Annapolis. Anyone who has his own opinion and don't aproove your Argument, 'coz he's got diffrent than yours (like Krzysztof Zimerman, me, Sławomir) , has something with brain, in your opinion. You don't discuss, you preach, you talk sermon, you make propaganda manifesto . That way you won't convict anyone to your point of view. And unfortunately you don't want to understand diffrent point of view, 'coz you consider your own opinion the best without weekness. You wanna respect - show it first, than you will get yours. Greetings from Poland.

No arguments make no answers, Mr. Frazell! You are the pretty nice example of someone who is asked to answer exact questions and in response talking about anything else but the point. I'm not going to repeat all of my questions. Just one - the most simple of all of them - why are you naming criminal elements in the Polish nation which help Germans to kill Jews (small number against a background of whole nation) Poles? Why are you blaming the whole Polish nation while you are so gentle and generous to Germans calling them Nazis? Why? I know, you say not 100% of Germans support Hitler regime. I know, just simple 90%. All of these millions of Germans enthusiastically adoring Hitler are Nazis, yes? But, in the same time, some marginal number of criminals who tried to earn money on Jews' disaster you name Poles and not CRIMINALS. How do you call this kind of "objectivity"? You don't know Poland's history or maybe I should say you learn our history from obviously anti-Polish sources (perhaps German-oriented). I would never name all Americans racist-killers of Blacks just because many of them (including women and children wathcing public executions) were killing Blacks in such a cruel way as burning living people hanging on a tree and treating them like wild animals. It's shocking but never forced me to name all Americans Black-killers as you do with Poles concerning Jews.

...I dont want to brag but...
do you even know that Poles, yes Poles, helped building the United States of A? Why do you have a monument of Kosciuszko at West Point? Oh, and who laid the fundations of your cavalry? Was it Puławski by any chance? Well, I could go on.

Do you know why the Poles are so angry with the past? Do you care? Read about "forgotten heroes of WW II". As much effort put in the struggle with 3rd Reich, Poland got least recognition. Why do you think England do not want to unclassifie documents about Poland and deaths of prominent leaders during WW II for another 50 years? Why Churchil confessed Poland was biggest stain on conscience?
And at the Victory Parade, was the polish heroes/troops cheared at? No, they were standing with the crowd not allowed to participate - and even some Burkinia Faso attended the military parade...

And some of you have the nerve to say that Poles ended what Hitler has started...with Jews I mean. I wont even comment on that. What I fear is that in years to come I will hear that it was Poland who started the war and was murdering Jews by millions...

Ever since the forign countries mengled in our politics Poland is an inn of europe. Every major conflict that happened in Europe swept through Poland. Almost 200 years of constant war. Can you imagine that? Over 100 of slavery. How many years of slavery Negros suffered? How many wars USA had to fight? How many times USA was invaded?
In 1939 England and France declared war :) when Germany invaded Poland. And what crucial help did we get? Pamphlets and leaflets in air drops. Aint that cute? Taking rest of europe took about the same time as taking Poland...by the way.

History major? You've been cheated!

So where is that anger and hate towards Poles come from?

Sting of remorse maybe?

Normally I wouldnt write this post but what I red here really pissed me off, I hate ignorance and populism...twisting history.

More self absorbed rantings. As you know absolutely nothing of the histories of others, being completely myopic, you magnify the very few doings of your own people. Taking credit for others, one statue in West Point doesnt mean much, got more of Frenchmen around like Lafayette. America was a country of immigrants, always has been, one or two Poles among hundreds of thousands doesnt say much for you. Get over yourselves, your high and mighty attitudes of your own importance reveal a deep rooted insecurity.

Try reading about others, and just perhaps a sense of ballance will slowly develop. May take a few centuries with your twisted views and obviously slanted "educational" system, but thwre is always hope. Chrurchil was an Imperialist, and felt bad about Polands being split between thw Soviets and Nazis. Czechoslovakia was a far worst stain upon thw West, but then, that would be intelligent and evenhanded, not Polish traits it seems.

This topic is so over, and Chopin lived in and culturally was French. Who are usually sappy musically, so just perhaps a swirl of genes did make a difference, as Churchills only good points came from his mother, an American. Should we claim him as such? You certainly would. Absurd.

This subject is so over, get over yourselves, and find something worthwhile to do, like reading world history.

art collegia delenda est

"self absorbed rantings"? :)
My good man, I fail to follow your "twisted" logic. My arguments are accual facts, not rantings. And you address them with some statement of Chopin being more of a french...

I am well aware of the situation after WW II. I know the facts. You do not have to remind me of the geopolitical situation. I didnt even say West sold us out. We simply got neglected, and then no one wanted to tucke with Stalin - whatever.
Poles were THE BIGGEST, should I remind you, fighting force incorporated in other coutries armies. A FACT. Poles (cryptologists) figured out ENIGMA - and what we get is a hoolywood- bullshit movie "ENIGMA". Talking bout a twisted point of view.

Talking credit for others?

Kościuszko - "brevetted by the Continental Congress to the rank of brigadier general and had become a naturalized citizen of the United States."
"His work made substantial contributions to the victory at Saratoga in 1777."
"Kościuszko was regarded as one of the best engineers in American service and George Washington gave him command of military engineering works at the stronghold in West Point. Then he asked to be transferred to the Southern Army, where he also made substantial contributions to the American victories."
"When he was leaving America, he wrote a last will, naming Thomas Jefferson the executor and leaving his property in America to be used to buy the freedom of black slaves, including Jefferson's, and to educate them for independent life and work."
"After the Revolution Kościuszko urged the Patriots to fulfill the promise of their doctrine of unalienable birthrights by ending slavery in the U.S. His plea went unheard, however."
And thats just from american annuals of history. Thats only one silly Pole.

Slanted educational system, heh. And who buit your NASA dishes for Mars programm? Our students from university of technology in Poznań - doing job that couldnt be done by other "professional" teams that had better funding and much more time - accually they got the project as a last minute resort...

I see that it's hard to give credit to others for what they've done and contributed.

And in one thing I agree, we should stpo ranting and working for the benefit of others, like USA for example. We should start taking care of problems that are gnawing at our countrys bones. After all thanks to WW II we still are decades behind 3rd world countries.

For those who deny Poland was given away to the Russian; read your history.

Roosevelt and the Allied Command allowed the Soviets to invade Eastern Europe and Germany. Why? Because it increased the attrition that was being applied to Germany.

The USSR were the real victors of WWII they lost more men and they killed more Germans than the rest of the Allies. The US and Western Europe miscalculated and thought they could get Stalin to move his forces back to the USSR after the war. Stalin had other plans and hence the Iron Curtain/Cold War began. We were unwilling to keep fighting and we allowed Stalin to take control of those countries.

Plus for the entirety of the Cold War there was never any thought towards liberating Poland or Eastern Europe. The only thought was to use those countries as the primary battlefield in any possible exchange between NATO and the USSR. So had war broken out; All of Eastern Europe would have been annihilated.

That does not foster good feelings towards the US; who were the primary architects of the Cold War.

So, we were to allow millions more to die, especialy our own boys, for what? Your insecurities? Yes, the Soviets won WWII, in Europe, we won in the Pacific, there was another front ya know, and ahd made a deal for the Soviets to enter in the East as we did not yet know the Atomic bombs would work. Self absorbed imbelciles. We helped arm the Soviets, though they did much themselves moving their factories east of the Urals, and of course Poland was on its borders, how the hell were we going to get there when we could barely invade N. Africa, Italy and France? You act like the Nazis wre patsys.

We agreed at Yalta to divide the post war world up into spheres of admirnistration, and of course Poland was right there, the Russians got to Berlin before we could. Though we possibly could have gotten into parts of Czechoslovakia first, but did hold up there. They have the msot to gripe about, but dont, because they are realists. Poles arent.

So we were supposed to start WWIII for your beneift? You ingrateful punks. We fought the Cold War, contaiined the Soviets til they fell apart, which was inevitable. Korea adn Vietnam were part of that. As was the Cuban embargo, and fights we made with evil partners in Latin America and Africa. With nuclear weapons, war was not an option, and no one fights for someone else, we jsut did in Iraq and see where it got us. We want out, we are not imperialists, but capitalists. You cant keep your land, as we will simply relieve you of your money. The missles are not for us, but europe. Get over yourselves. Idiots, like you have ever halpeed anyone, like the remaining Jews after the Holocaust. Riiiiiiight. Your educational system sucks. Even worse than ours.

Now I see your level of "education". All you do sir is insult people. Have I done that in my entries? I see dialogue, conversation is not an option here. If you are a proud example of what majority of americans are then all I have is pity for you. In the woods is the ability of communication and coherance in addressing at your interlocutor.
Flame on, burn the witches and the ones with different points of view. In your behavior you are a prime example of media lobotomy.

And the Jews again! What is with you? Did it ever come too your mind that what happened to Jews was Stalin and communists actions? In a matter of fact in "the West" lies the responsibility of letting a mass murderer take control of other lands...Do you know what happened to polish civilians, especially women, when the red army entered? Do you know what happened to civilians when so called peace treaty was signed? Peace was far from here when the regime started to "relocate" poles...mostly to syberia...do you know how many died? And what about teachers, professors and polish inteligence? High ranking officers, administration and politicians? Poets, artists and clergy...have you any idea? How much of polish cultural heritage is in france, germany, russia and USA? No one is eager to return the spoils of war...stolen from our country...safekeeping, right? :)
Even germany was rebuilt, and Poland? Did anyone helped? maybe Marshal programme? Right, so silly of me...
Now, these are the last words I will utter: go on and play hide and seek. I scrolled the board and clearly see all you do "sir" is irritate people.
Ignorance is bliss.

You do seem rather pleased with yourself.

Tens of millions of living people are very happy we did not go to war for the sake of an arrogant lot of fools. Thats your country, build it, defend it. You want NATO benefits, you take on responsibiltiies, something you have never been taught it seems.

go to your bliss.

MR. FRAZELL WOULD HAVE DONE AN IDEAL JOB OF WRITING A SOVIET
COMMUNIST/NAZI GERMAN REVISIONIST VERSION OF WORLD WAR II. AS ANTHONY SUTTON HAS SHOWN IN HIS WORKS ON THE FINANCING OF THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION, NAZI GERMANY, AND THE POST-WORLD WAR II SOVIET STATE, "WALL STREET" AND PEOPLE LIKE A. HAMMER WERE "CLOSE FRIENDS" OF SOVIET COMMUNISM.[ BY THE WAY, THE SOVIET NKVD IN FACT AUTHORIZED THE TRANSFER OF JEWISH REFUGEES TO THE GERMAN GESTAPO WHILE HITLER AND STALIN WERE STILL ALLIES. NAZI GERMANY AND STALIN'S USSR WERE "CLOSE ALLIES" UNTIL 1941. SOCIALIST-GLOBALIST ACCOMPLICES.]
THE U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT HAD MANY "USEFUL IDIOTS," AS LENIN CALLED PRO-COMMUNIST WESTERN SYMPATHIZERS', IN ITS RANKS. ALSO, MANY AMERICAN AND BRITISH "INTELLECTUALS WERE
"FASCINATED" BY SOVIET COMMUNISM. GIVEN WESTERN PASSIVITY
TOWARD NAZI GERMANY [INITIALLY] AND SUPPORT FOR THE SOVIET UNION [FROM ITS INCEPTION TO 1991], THE POLES HAD FEW POLITICAL OPTIONS. IF FRAZELL EXPECTS A MEDIUM-SIZED COUNTRY
SUCH AS POLAND WAS IN 1939, TO HAVE CARRIED ON A WAR WITH BOTH NAZI GERMANY AND THE USSR AND TO HAVE DEFEATED THEM ON POLAND'S OWN TERMS, WHEN IT TOOK AN ALLIED COALITION TO DEFEAT NAZI GERMANY IN ABOUT SIX YEARS, THEN HIS BIAS AGAINST THE POLES IS QUITE EVIDENT. FOR FRAZELL IF THE FACTS DO NOT CORRESPOND TO HIS VERSION OF HISTORICAL REALITY, TOO BAD FOR THE FACTS.
BRITAIN AND FRANCE FAILED TO HONOR THEIR MILITARY COMMITMENTS TO POLAND IN 1939. THE POLES WHO ESCAPED THEIR COUNTRY IN 1939 FOUGHT WITH GREAT COURAGE ON ALL MAJOR FRONTS [SEE NORMAN DAVIES]. FDR, CHURCHILL, AND STALIN HAD THEIR OWN AGENDA AT TEHERAN, YALTA, AND POTSDAM BETWEEN 1943 AND 1945. THOSE MOST AFFECTED BY THE FINAL TREATY DECISIONS WERE NOT ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE.
BY THE WAY, IN ADDITION TO U.S. INVESTMENTS IN THE ABOVE MENTIONED TOTALITARIAN REGIMES, WHAT DID THE U.S. AND BRITAIN DO TO STOP THE HOLOCAUST? WHEN POLAND'S UNDERGROUND REP. [JAN KARSKI] CONTACTED FELIX FRANKFURTER OF THE U.S. SUPREME COURT AND FDR ABOUT GERMAN ATROCITIES IN POLAND,
BOTH DECLINED TO TAKE HIM SERIOUSLY. ALSO, DIDN'T THE U.S. ACTUALLY TURN BACK A SHIP FULL OF HOLOCAUST REFUGEES?
AND WHAT ABOUT THE ANTISEMITIC STATEMENTS OF THE EISENHOWER FAMILY ABOUT ALLOWING SUCH REFUGEES IN THE U.S.?
MORE GENERALLY, WHAT ABOUT THE FRENCH VICHY REGIME WHICH WILLFULLY SENT FRENCH JEWS TO GERMAN DEATH CAMPS OR THE ALLIED REFUSAL TO BOMB THE DEATH CAMPS. FRAZELL, OF COURSE,
EXONERATES THOSE WHO COULD HAVE DONE MOST TO END WORLD WAR II EARLIER AND TO HAVE STOPPED THE SUFFERING OF MILLIONS, ESPECIALLY EUROPEAN JEWS, POLES, RUSSIANS, ETC.
MR. FRAZELL IS DOING A GREAT JOB IN DEFENDING THE CAUSE OF
GLOBALISTIC- TOTALITARIAN REGIMES. THE FACT THAT HIS COUNTRY WAS A PARTY TO THE CREATION OF A POST-WORLD WAR II
ORDER THAT ALLOWED STALIN TO DOMINATE EAST-CENTRAL EUROPE [AND MAO TO DOMINATE CHINA] SAYS A GREAT DEAL ABOUT
THE "MORALITY" OF HIS COUNTRY'S LEADERS AND THE "EFFECTIVENESS" OF ITS MILITARY POLICY [HALF OF EUROPE SOVIET COMMUNIST UNTIL 1989, VIETNAM ALL COMMUNIST, NORTH KOREA
STILL COMMUNIST AND A "THREAT'."] THE U.S. AND ITS MILITARY WON
THE COLD WAR? COMMUNISM WAS DEFEATED? IT SEEMS THAT WHEREVER THE U.S. "FOUGHT" COMMUNISM, THE COMMUNISTS BECAME STRONGER AND THEIR NAZI GERMAN-LIKE REGIMES DESTROYED HUMAN RIGHTS.
P.S.
MR. FRAZELL. WHY DON'T YOU EXAMINE THE PLIGHT OF AFRICAN SLAVES, AMERICAN INDIANS, AND VARIOUS IMMIGRANT GROUPS IN
AMERICA BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO PLACE THE BLAME OF RACISM ON OTHER COUNTRIES? WHY DON'T YOU READ A BOOK WRITTEN BY
YOUR OWN DIPLOMAT ["I SAW POLAND BETRAYED"} WHICH WILL GIVE YOU A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR LEADERS AND YOUR OWN
COUNTRY'S HISTORY?
YOUR VIEW OF THE POLES IS SIMILAR TO THE ONE PROPAGATED BY DR. GOEBBELS, NAZI GERMANY'S PROPAGANDA MINISTER, AND
SOVIET COMMUNIST AGITPROP DURING THE POLISH-SOVIET WAR OF
1920 WHEN LENIN AND TROTSKY THUNDERED ABOUT THE NEED TO
DESTROY "WHITE' POLAND AND LINK UP WITH COMMUNISTS IN EUROPE. IN 1920, THE POLES ROUTED THE SOVIET ARMY OUTSIDE
WARSAW, WITHOUT "WESTERN AID." AND HALTED THE SPREAD OF
COMMUNISM UNTIL HITLER AND STALIN INVADED IN 1939. AFTER WORLD WAR II, IT WAS A DIFFERENT STORY. THEN," POLAND'S ALLIES"
SHOWED THEIR TRUE IDEOLOGICAL COLORS.

TSA doesn't inspect incoming cargo. Was this Customs that destroyed the piano?

Donald Frazell
As far as I know nobody insults your country here in this comments.Zimmerman said just waht he thinks about your government policy. So why u insulted others and lie in a such a horrible way?Is it some complexes that u would like to tell us about>?Poles dont have reasons to be ashemed of.Of course there were moments in history that shouldnt happen but we are honest with it and its not a secret.Events like 60' antisemitic attacks or Jedwabne are widely known and nobody is trying to hide it.There are many books bout subject and Polish gov apologise Jews for that.Saying that Poles have long tradition of anti-semitism is just lack of knowledge and stereotype cos as somebody earlier said Poland was for most of its independent history tolerant country and safe place for Jews who were opressed at that time in most countries.Yes we still have Jewish community Jewish politicians and artists.Dont lie Donald that jews were seperated from others like a historician u should know that they had great contribution to our culture and history in many ways. The most horrible lie is that about Polish contribution to Holocaust. It was Poles who saved most of them even that Poland was only country where for helping Jews you were sentenced to death. Many media now are trying to sell lies about real history of Holocaust and its shocking that people are so miserably educated to let them do that.Other thing is homophobia.Poland had never criminalise homosexuality in its history.Today single gay people can adopt a child. There are group oposed to their rights but u can find them in any country. Its a matter of time when full rights gonna be achieved by them.Donald your comments of comunism is just silly and I cant call it different, just stupid. There were a lot of risings against Rules of comunists: 1956 1968 1970 1976 1980 and finally 1989.Most of them was shut violently by comunists.Do u really think that it was possible just to make a protest and they would say ok you dont want us here so we gonna go back to Moscow? That so naive and only show your total lack of any knowledge about history.Rest of European from Central and Eastern Europe share similar point of view about comunism times and its very often visible during debates about aniversaries in EU.Please dont compare German and Polish role in WWII cos its really 2 different stories. While in Germany most of society was enthusiastic about Hitler's rules and minority was against him in Poland majority was helping Jews and fighting in underground minority was submissive towards Germans.

Did Iraq made u proud cos your soldiers killed 1 mln people and raped thousands of women? You call it SO LITTLE???!!!Yeah they really want your army to stay there maybe if they gonna be in good form they gonna kill some more? Its so pathetic to hear that you are proud when some stupid politic who have blood on his hands said some cheap propaganda and you take it all.Missiles in Poland would gave us really big benefits from having an US army on our land well that small part wouldnt be ours anymore then.Specially when US said that we would have to pay the most of the costs and rockets not gonna be armed. How tricky is that to take all the threats away from your own borders, if anybody would like to attack USA the missile gonna be destroy above Polish territory and it gonna fall down on that territory as well maybe kill few thousands people but who cares? If we say something they called us spoilt brats..I dont have to say that majority of Poles are against missile shield.

Donald you are saying that Poles thinks that they are in center of the world but what I can say about your comments about your own country?Thats exactly what u think about USA, so please calm down and stop that tirades cos USA its not really worlds most inportant actor. You have big problems actually founded you by your banks and politics including newest "free market" star Obama, European Union become worlds biggest economy, in Europe we pay very little attention to US so get over it and stop being drama queen Donald shit happens u know. You gonna have one world famous pianist less visiting your country but u can always go to Britney Spears concert Im sure that u not gonna have problems with understanding her priceless creativeness..

PS Zimmermann had a long tradition of spending his incomes and much more for charity around the world so your money wasnt spent by him.He live in Switzerland and its nothing strange about it since there is freedom of movement, no borders and European citizenship.Something very normal and obvious in EU.I can see that its a news overseas.
