L.A. Opera's 'Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny' earns 2 Grammy nominations

December 4, 2008 |  1:55 pm

Mahagonny

Why don't these singers look happy?

They should -- Los Angeles Opera's production of Kurt Weill's "Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny," conducted by L.A. Opera music director James Conlon and featuring Patti LuPone, Audra McDonald and Anthony Dean Griffey, has been nominated for two Grammy Awards: best classical album and best opera recording.

Of course, maybe the singers were reacting to Mark Swed's unenthusiastic review of the John Doyle-directed stage production at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in 2007.
