Prop. 8 repercussions: Theater's artistic director resigns

Scott Eckern has resigned as artistic director of the California Musical Theatre in Sacramento, several days after it became known that he had donated $1,000 to backers of Prop. 8, the initiative making same-sex marriage illegal in California. Eckern's support for the amendment to the state constitution touched off criticism from some prominent theater artists.

"The board appreciates Scott Eckern's 25 years of invaluable service to the organization and the advancement of musical theater as an art form," theater officials said in a statement issued this morning.
