Oscar-winning 'Once' to become Broadway musical

2:54 PM, October 16, 2008

Once_2 "Once," the indie film underdog that waltzed away with an Oscar for best original song in 2007, will become a musical with sights set on Broadway.

Tony-winning producers John N. Hart Jr., Jeff Sine and Fred Zollo have acquired the live theater rights to the movie with the intention of bringing it to Broadway during the 2010-2011 season.

No word yet on the creative team for the theatrical adaptation of "Once," though producers are expected to announce that shortly.

Set in Dublin, "Once" tells the story of a street musician and a Czech immigrant who meet and begin writing songs with the hopes of landing a music contract. The movie won an Oscar for the song "Falling Slowly," which was written by the principal actors, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová.

I am happy to learn that the film will be turned into a Broadway musical. I think it'll make a great stage show.
I loved 'Once'. A friend lent me the DVD saying I have to watch it because it's about a street performer (and I am one, too). The scene where the busker runs after a guy who stole money from his bag rang very true - I had that happen to me, too, and it ended the same way as in the movie. From there on the movie kept growing on me as it went on.

Unless it's Hansard and Irglova in the lead roles, I can't see how it could work.
The movie was PERFECT. Hansard and Irglova make it PERFECT. And PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't make it lavish ...that would defeat the point of the film!
Oh it is gonna be so hard to get it right (♪ to get it right ♪) if it's not an accurate reproduction of the original.
No glitz,
no glamor and
no substitutes please
I beg the producers and then wish them ♪ all the luck in the world ♪.

Yuke. What a horrible idea. Real music getting watered down by Broadway pseudo-rock wannabes is what this thing seems destined to become. And why pay 200.00 dollars to see actors playing Glen and Marketa when you can currently see the real thing as The Swell Season tours for less than $50.00?

Awful idea. AWFUL.
