Last month, Richard Koshalek -- former director of L.A.’s Museum of Contemporary Art -- abruptly stepped down from his most recent post as president of Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design after school trustees refused Koshalek’s request for a four-year contract extension. It also suspended fundraising for a $50-million expansion program that Koshalek had championed, which included a Frank Gehry-designed design center and library.

The college has yet to find a permanent replacement, but the board of trustees today announced a new interim president: Frank L. Ellsworth. The executive, who has served as president of Pitzer College, president of the Independent Colleges of Southern California and most recently president of the Japan Society in New York City, will take over immediately and continue through the ongoing search for a permanent president, anticipated by the end of 2009.
