Readers defend Chris Brown in the Rihanna incident

February 13, 2009 |  1:03 pm

Rihanna and Chris Brown attended a salute to Clive Davis on Saturday night in Beverly Hills.

R&B superstar couple Rihanna and Chris Brown have recently found themselves even more in the spotlight due to their private-turned-public "disturbia" situation. After reports surfaced that Brown allegedly injured the singer to the point where she had to be treated at a "major medical facility" after a quarrel, readers took to the blogs to surprisingly defend the male sex symbol. Since the emergence of the story, we've received over 150 comments regarding the situation.

WHITNEY wrote: I'M STILL GOING TO SUPPORT CHRIS BROWN UNTIL THE END. I DONT CARE IF HE DID IT OR NOT. OBVIOUSLY SHE PROVOKED HIM AND EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES SO, IM NOT GOING TO DOWN TALK HIM NOR TRY TO BRING HIM DOWN LIKE THE WHITE MEDIA IS GOING TO. HE'S STILL A KID. KIDS MAKE DUMB CHOICES EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. GIVE THE KID A BREAK IT'S HIS FIRST TIME IN HIS 4 YEAR CAREER.

shukura wrote: By the way, from what I understand Chris Brown is not from the ghetto and and domestic violence happens everywhere. For anyone to suggest that only ghetto people hit their mates is ludicrous. Gosh, why do people always have to resort to racism when something happens in the news. It gets old and very tired.

Damn shame wrote: This man is facing allegations, yet we don't know all the facts and some have already tried and convicted him. This is why I hate the feminazi movement. Don't get that confused with women't rights either. And yes, I am a woman.

Lindsey wrote: I really hope sometimg about this isn't true
I've been crying about this all day and would like to know the whole story.
Chris is a good guy that I would never think would do this.

Bentiz Lapor wrote: Poor Chris. His life wasn't easy and I understand his step dad beat his Mom which he hated. Clearly, Chris has some very deep scars that he thought he had a handle on, but doesn't. He will need to get help so he will learn how to control his temper (if he did hit her). I'll bet Rhianna was the one who hit him first and then he flashes back to childhood, and before you know it Rhianna has a black eye and a scratch on her face. I blame both parties for letting an argument escalate to that point. Sometime it's best to just close your mouth(Rhianna). Takes two to argue. Plus, if you can't get along then you shouldn't be together in the first place.

Some readers did side with Rhianna and were quick to defend her against the Chris Brown fans. See their comments after the jump...

Anaya said: I am a HUGE fan of both Chris Brown and Rihanna. What he did to Rihanna was unacceptable. PERIOD. POINT BLANK. However, we have to assume that he is innocent until he is proven guilty in court. Since this was a one time thing, he needs counseling, not jail time. He also will need the support of his fans and admirers. Of course we cannot forget about Rihanna. She did not deserve that. I hope she has a speedy and full recovery. We've got to remember they're young, and being a teenager myself (I'm 15), I can understand that he made a mistake. We all make mistakes so no one has room to judge Chris or Rihanna.
I pray for the best for both of them.

JC wrote: I don't understand how people can defend Brown! Calling him boo and saying they love him. I don't know what happened and I hope to God he didn't do it (although reports are saying he did) but just like we don't want to condemn him until he's proven guilty, don't show him any love either. I mean love him, sure but to be coming on here saying, "My boo, I love him, he'd never do it." Please don't glorify him until it's proven that he didn't do it. Just because he's handsome and can sing and dance is no reason to drool over him when he has these type of allegations hanging over his head!

disgusted wrote: Oh, I see the fangirls made here to the Times to defend that jerk! What is wrong with this generation of young girls that they will actually a person who would beat a woman, and give her injuries so bad that she winds up in a hospital? You'd never know there was a women's movement in this country 40 years ago with all of the "stand-by-your-man" mentality going on. It doesn't matter if Rihanna allegedly "started" it, Chris Brown went waaaaaay to far in "finishing it" and he needs to remain in jail for a long time to come for it!

Are good looks and celebrity status enough to get out of an alleged domestic violence charge? Are Rhianna and Chris Brown, as some other commenters suggested, the new Whitney and Bobby? Is beating a woman a defensible action in ANY possible situation? State your opinion below.

How very regrettable. This awful lowlife behaviour, just at a time when President Barack H. Obama and his charming and elegant wife, Mrs. Michele Obama are injecting some genuine class and noblesse into the scene.I read German, French, Italian and Spanish newspapers from Europe, and the Obamas are very highly regarded. Now you have these two high profile Black Americans capturing the headlines worldwide, and creating a very very bad impression with their disgraceful, lowlife and uncivilized behavour!! Quel Merde!! Please Black Americans, let us see you instituting a Renaissance of Culture and Enterprise. Let the world see you reconnecting to your ancestral and cultural roots in Africa, your Mother. Incidentally, why do we not see rich and influential Black Americans active in Africa? Not one has been reported going to Darfur, where your brothers and sisters are being enslaved and killed. White Americans movie and music stars and White evangelists have gone there and elsewhere in Africa. Could some of you millionaire Black entertainers not build even one medial clinic in Africa?. Where is your pride? I am aware of one Jamaican in Canada, a Mr. C. Alexander Brown of Ottawa, who, together with some Somali friends, without any publicity, sent half a ton of medical drugs to an isolated group of villages in north-east Africa. He also was invited to South Africa to advise on affordable housing. And this is not a young man. Why are Black Americans not doing similar things today? Where is the spirit that they had in the 1960s, especially in California and New York? Let there be some pride and good behaviour.

I LOVE MY Christopher Maurice Brown 4get rihanna. I am ANTI-Rihanna right now. She has slaughtered Chris's good name and I dont like her at all. I didnt like when they started dating cuz she took my man and now because of this heck no. I never will like her again. Now everytime people mention chris brown name they are going to call him an abuser and all that nonsense. I will do anything to clear Chris name and rid him of that triffling, jealous, mean, RIHANNA!!!!!!!
>>>Shakaykay wrote this!!!!!

Well, every coin has two sides, so does a story. I am a woman. I have 2 boys. I teach them never to lay a finger on a woman but if a woman lay their hands on them, it is time to defend themself. It is easy to say walk away, but some women do not know when too stop, even when the man is walking away.
Society places too much power on "woman right". what about the rights of the men. I have seen so many situation where men get beat down because they hurt a woman. When you try to resolve the situation, it is alway the women first to lay the first blow.
I enjoy both entertainer, but down drag Chris through the mud because he laid it down. Did anyone really stop to think how much he took before giving the first blow.
And Rihanna, girl, you are from the Caribbean. Didn't anyone teach you that when no weapon are at hand, you use the ones god gave you!!! (your teeth, and I am sure you were wearing heel, and don't forget the long nail you sport. And at last your hands and feet (LOL))
I think if anything they are both to be blamed

WOW! I cannot believe that some people would stand by someone who beat on a woman. No matter if Chris Brown is a celebrity he is still human and NOT above the law. Who cares if she provoked him? That justifies him putting his hands on her? NO!

On the other hand these are allegations...innocent until proven guilty, that's every American's right so don't judge. The DA threw back the case so obviously they do not have strong evidence against him or he would have already been indicted.

Bottom line...You should never physically hurt someone unless its self defense. PERIOD

Lastly for those of you who say youre still going to stick by him even if he possibly gets indicted, you're pathetic! I'd like to see a man beat on you and then everyone stand by his side and not help protect you. She was more than physically hurt, her pride, dignity and self respect went out the door the moment he hit her and it was WIDELY publicized. Take a walk in someone else's shoes. She worked her ass off to get to where she is at. It took her three albums before she became a fashion ICON and pop diva. Now she will mostly be remembered for this moment. Both of their careers have been tarnished by this incident...

Ignorance won't get you anywhere and what goes around comes around.

I think the only way a woman gets bite marks on her arms and fingers is if she is on the mans back and reaching around him...........................sounds like Brown may have been defending himself?

To be honest with you a man does not bite when he is fighting. I believe that Chris Brown had his new girlfriend in the car after coming from the party like the radio said and Rihanna started running off at the mouth and his new girlfriend beat her ass. Chris Brown is just taking the rap for his new girlfriend. If the po po were doing the investigation correctly all they have to do is match his teeth print to her bite wounds and confirm it. I wish both of them the best though.

HEY
CHRIS BROWN I LOVE YA SO MUCH, I HAVE LOVED U FROM THE FIRST DAY U APPEARED ON MY TV, I WAS LIKE WHO IS THAT SEXY PERSON. HE IS SO HOT LOL. I CNT BELIEVE WHAT IS GOIN ON AT THE MO AND I DNT BELIEVE IT BUT NO ONE WILL NEVER NO THE TRUTH EXCEPT U. I AM SURPORTING U BBE BIG TIME AS UR MY IDOL, NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU, I WILL ALWAYS BE DOWNLOAD PICTURES OF U, TO PUT ON MY WALL, WHICH I DNT INK I CAN FIT ANYMORE ON COS IT`S FILLED UP WIV U LOL. I WILL ALSO STILL BE LISTERN 2 UR MUSIC BBE AND I AVE ALL UR SINGLES AND ALBUMS. WEN THEY COME OUT IN THE SHOPS, I AM THE FIRST TO BE THERE TO GET IT FIRST LOL. IF ANY INK HAPPENS 2 U I WILL GO OF MY HEAD LIKE I DID WEN I LOST MY TICKETS 2 SEE YA IN CONCERT AT THE O2 THIS YEAR, I WAS SO UPSET I SO BADLY WANTED 2 MEET U, BUT I NO THERE WILL ALWAYS BE OTHER TIMES :) I LOVE YA DVD, IT MAKES LAUGH SO MUCH AND WEN IM DOWN I STICK U ON AND U MAKE ME HAPPY AGAIN :) LOVE YA 4EVA BBE , HOPE EVA THING GOES WELL 4 U XXXXX

Well, i don't no what really happend so i cannot say anything about them. First i need to know what really happens and after that, i will judge.

She has injuries. He doesn't. Um... How exactly does this show that it was self-defense on Brown's part?

He has the right to beat on someone because his mom got beat on? Really? How does that even work? If I see someone get shot as a child, does that mean it's okay for me to go shoot someone? Nope.

Come on, people. It's pretty disgusting to sit there and assume (without any facts, as so many of you are quick to point out) that Rihanna /must/ have done something to get hit. That's not how the world works. It doesn't matter what she may or may not have done -- violence is inexcusable.

Not just against women; against anyone. Get real. It's inexcusable against anyone. If he had been the one who got beat up, then she should suffer the same fate that he will suffer now.

I'm 42 married with six kids, four of them are boys...its wrong to hit a woman, BUT I will stand behind Chris.

there is absolutely no excuse for what he did to her. period.

no matter what argument they got into before this happened, he should have handled it with self control, not violence. i find it apalling by how many people can still defend him after this, saying that somehow rhianna "provoked" him.
NO woman asks to have the crap beaten out of them, it is his fault 100 percent.
now hopefully he will face the consequences coming his way.

I am probably one of Chris Brown's oldest fans - at age 26. I think he has a lot of growing up to do, but I don't think the blame should be soley on him. Rihanna must have provoke the situation to some extent. He's difinitely wrong for hitting her, but I must give him credit for having the courage to turn himself in. I'd like to see how this case unfolds, there are still a lot of uncertain details to clarify before we pass judgement as to who is the villian.

I am shocked and amazed that people can sit back and blame, this whole situation on the "white media" and turn this into a racial issue. This is an issue about a man and a woman, who for some reason, know only to them, that ended up with someone hurt and in the hospital... AGE, RACIAL, BACK GROUND, OR ANY OTHER EXCUSE you can offer, is not acceptable. The fact is he LOST control and she ended up in the hospital! He needs to anti up to what HE did and make resitution, and do what he needs to learn how to control his actions, and to become a better person for his ACTONS... and if she did do something to PROVOKE him, that is something she needs to anti up too and do what she has to, to control her actions too.... But "NOTHING" excuses physical or emotional abuse..... Trust me, I know.... Been there, had that happen to me...

This poor Chris Brown they are blaming it all on him when it is her falt to not just his. She started this all by giving him thoses stuped herpes and made him very mad. I am going to back him up till the end of this. People are saying that he was drunk at the time of this.Just give him a break he is only a nineteen year old kid all kid make some mistikes in life and this is just his first so just give him a brear!!!!!!!!!

I think that until all sides are told... His, her's and the truth... There is no way reason Any of us should be passing judgement. I know even being Sicilian has a different spin on things. We are knnown for our "Passionate" behaviour. And a woman who was being beaten and threatened, does not toss keys out of the window. She runs screaming down the street... So one can truly have no idea of such as their dynamic.

i love chris brown. and i do belive that maybe rihanna provoked him and maybe he just hit her once. BUT once a man hits a woman then they think its ok to do more. so im in the middle i think chris is very young and has a huge influence on teens and what he did was unexceptable, however rihanna always seemed to look very snobby.. so im not sure which way to go.

I seriously cannot understand the utter disconnect and downright idiocy of some the posts on here. It's a disgrace. People are here defending a man who beat a woman so bad she ended up in the hospital. There is NO excuse you sorry excuses for men and women. Get that through your head. None. It's not a "mistake". A mistake is knocking over a glass or something. Not, "Oops, I accidently punched you in the face repeatedly. My bad."

Disgusting. Cowardly. Not a mistake.

I know their are the crazy, teeny bopper s out there in love with Chris Brown ,but I mean you really got to think about whether or not if Chris did the same thing to you, or your mother or anyone you loved would that fly with you? I've delt with my fair share of domestic drama at home and trust me it's not a joke. I don't particularly like Rihanna and when I first heard this story I blamed her of provoking him, but just as Kanye said even if she provoked him, hitting him or whatever, it should never go that far and he should have restrained himself. I know people make many mistakes ,but as the story started to unravel come to find out he has hit her numerous times before! Chris does deserve his due process though, but the facts have came out clearly that he didn't even beat her he ASSAULTED her to a bloody pulp and left her by herself unconcious!!! If she had died like that NO C.B would be on here defending his butt if he had turned himself into LAPD! He could have killed her and no man should ever lay their hands on anyone no matter who the hell they are and how much you don't like them. I have no sympathy for what he did to her and he's really going to have bad karma in his life if he get's off. I can't believe I'm saying this after I'm the person that got my section during the Glow in the Dark tour to boo Rihanna ,but I just want to tell her that I am definetly sorry and I hope you get through this. Your a strong black woman like myself and I have mad respect for you and hope that you will speak out against Chris and be a voice for young women like me who are scared and help us through!!! Chris on the other hand I am ashamed to even say that your my black brother because you definetly represent the stereotype that epitimes what a black man is! I hope that you don't think of yourself as a man because you are a stupid boy who thinks that fame and money will get you through life and it won't! I hope God helps you learn a lesson or two in life because being a victim of domestic violence like I am, we are suppose to rise above it and be stronger than all the misery we went through in our childhood!!!

I'll always love Chris Brown.. no matter this incident. I'll always believe Chris Brown is good, he's only a kid.

To all of you drawing conclusions about Chris--mainly negative, remember that you don't know him, or Rihanna, and neither do I. People need to realize that what happened between them, happened between them and not the whole rest of the world. To the fans that are sticking around-- I'm so proud. You always see fan girls around and then when something goes bad they disappear. I am in no way endorsing Chris Brown, or Rihanna-- I have no side. Whatever is in the dark will be brought to the light so gossip and rumors are going to fly until then. If you want to choose to hate him, then hate him but don't go back on your word if the verdict is not that of what you first expected. Chris Brown is in my thoughts and so is Rihanna. They are both present in my prayers and I truly only want the best for them. People idolize them as gods, but they are only humans. The only difference is that they are elevated onto this pedestal for all to see and speculate about. It is possible for either of them to fall off. The fact is we all make mistakes! So don't judge either of them! LOVE and SUPPORT from the Bay Area!

WOW...this is worrying - Let's stick with the facts - Rihanna was beaten up - Regardless how much a verbal argument gets you never ever hit anyone...I have had one woman getting all ghetto on me - she said so very untrue and nasty things - HONESTLY I WANTED TO BEAT HER BUT I DID NOT - I knew my strength and would have probably crush her but something stopped me - IT IS CALLED COMMON SENSE AND CONTROL - if Chris Brown cannot keep his cool he needs therapy - =

why would you talk bad about chris brown?? Rihanna might not even be as bad as reports say thats why she wont even show her face. Plus brown turned himself in and didnt try to run. and YES we do know there was a woman suffrage movement you idiot!!!!

I am a female, Im 18, Im mixed with black and white and I support Chris Brown.
I have nothing against Rihanna though.
Most of these people are saying things like "Its not acceptable to hit anyone ever"
or "Its not acceptable to hit a women.".
Well I think that IF she provoked him to do it (by hitting, shaking, slapping, cursing, etc....) then it is her fault. But we don't really know what happened. I think that if his ads and songs are being removed then so should hers because they both par took in this event.
I still support Chris Brown even if he did it. Only because (im not blaming her for anything because I dont know) she probably did something that caused him to go off.
To Rihanna: Get well soon hun! I am praying for you.
To Chris: You deserve one more chance. You are human. You make mistakes. I'll continue to listen to your music and love you! You made one mistake in 4 years(?) of your career. Compared to most celebs thats very good! You should have walked away boy! But its okay just know that you should never hit a woman again. Just walk away hun. Im praying for you. I love you.
To the commenters: STOP JUDGING THESE PEOPLE. NONE OF YOU KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENED SO SHUT UP!
To the media: YOU ARE RUINING THESE PEOPLES LIVES! YOU DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED EITHER! JUST LET CHRIS AND RIHANNA AND GOD WORK THIS SITUATION OUT! YOU ALL JUST NEED TO MINED YOUR OWN BUSINESS UNLEES YOU HAVE PROOF OF WHAT CHRIS, RIHANNA, OR THE POLICE SAY. CONFIRM YOU INFORMATION.

Just know that Im gonna support Chris in everything that he does and hopefully God can see him through this as well as Rihanna.

To Chris: I love you. Let them talk their stuff. God will see you through hun.

Much respect Rihanna.
Much love Chris.

Wow, ignorance is bliss. Chris Brown is totally out of control and no woman or man deserves to be hit or smacked down. He is in the wrong and some day he will admit it... I am sure about that... For others to say that she probably provoked it... are ignorant and they need some IPV education.

I think that it is completely ridiculous that somebody can defend the actions of Chris Brown or even say that he was provoked.
I think that those who think it is okay or that he was provoked are uneducated morons who need to get an education and realize what they are saying.
Domestic violence is a crime because it is immoral- under any and all circumstances.
Yes, I believe Chris Brown obviously needs psychiatric help but he also deserves every minute behind bars that his conviction could carry.
