Extended Play: New Miley Cyrus song attempts to break teen pop image
Teen superstar Miley Cyrus premiered her new music video for "7 Things" last weekend, a markedly mature -- at least by Cyrus' standards -- breakup song. Extended Play's Todd Martens sees the single and new album as the "Hannah Montana" star's first major attempt to break from her teeny-bopper image. Though not overly impressed with the tune, Martens says it has all the elements to become a hit.
Thirty-three readers logged their comments on the original story. Some were less than enamored of Cyrus' music, while others declared their love for the artist.
Lilme can relate to the music:
I love this song any girl can listen to it and feel like its the truth u know i do!!! so AWESOME job
Mandy wrote:
erm, she is totally not suited for rock songs. i mean, can she do a surgery and change her voice? it sucks.
Roxy wrote:
you know what miley cyrus is a great singer. so many people look up to her. she just wants to help people who are going through a breakup. shes going through a breakup too and wants to sing about it. i would too. she is amazing.
K wrote:
The song, the video... I don't know, it's all things we've heard before. I don't know what what I was expecting, she's only 15, but she brings absolutely nothing new to the musical world. People will eat up just about anything, I guess.
Isabel has a message for all the haters:
i love the song in my opinion the video is showing the way girls are in reality...the song is great and so is miley...just let her live her dream people...if you dont like her stop watching...but keep your eyes close because she is everywhere!!!
Tim avoids any kind of subtlety:
What, are all of you people smoking crack? This is a piece of garbage song from a no talent kid of a no talent celebrity. What is wrong with you people that you would actually think this is good? Maybe you should try a little more thinking for yourself and a little less of letting Disney think for you.
Are you a Cyrus fan or hater? Declare your teen-pop allegiance -- or abhorrence -- in the comments.

Well personally I'm neither here nor there. I think it sounds mature (which I think may be a good thing for her) and she's singing about her life experiences (which means what she sings about comes from somewhere deep down inside).
A lot of artistes tend to sing other people's music and because of that the message of the song may not be something that the performer relates to personally ... and I think when an entertainer sings about something that means something to them / something that they've experienced, when you hear the song, you can tell.
I think that's probably the best thing about this song in particular.

Miley Cyrus has a great voice to work with but has stuck to the "teen pop sinsation" attitude to long and will not be able to change that without becoming the next Spears sister. In all realittly she should just stick with what she can sing and stop trying to push for more, besides she already makes 12 million a concert what more could she want?

If you dont like her get over it. You need to leave her and every other star alone.Miley is awesome so just because you dont like her doesnt mean you should trash her. I like her music.

This song is okay, I guess fun to listen to and laugh at how her voice goes from being her in the verse to it being digitally retouched in the chorus. This song is really unoriginal.

She may be a Disney-manufactured tween star, but the girl can definitely sing!
I, for one, am glad this younger generation is being fed some tasteful "rock"-pop as opposed to the lame cheesy pop, or the shamefully inappropriate songs that seem to have infiltrated today's music world.
Miley's a genuinely good singer; if you don't like her style, don't listen to her. If you do.. then enjoy: she's going to be around for a few years to come.

It so unfair why does everyone hate Miley? Shes great and i support her.
She is great and she actully changed my life around and taught me stuff.

OK i have to admit i like the song and i find it stuck in my head every now and then. But i think Miley desparately needs to take some singing lessons cuz she is terrible live. and i mean TERRIBLE They make her sond great with all that expensive equiptment. but in reality her voice sucks! sucks hard! They could make a monkey shoud good in a perfessional studio!

For everyone who is saying that Miley doesn't know how to sing - WTF?? This 15 yr old girl can belt out a tune with her raspy velvet alto voice like noone's business! I've heard her live as well - the girl *performs* like an olympian onstage people! Give her a break! Of course her vocals arent' going to be as perfect as her recordings - she is also a helluva dancer and stage performer *in addition to* her singing and acting. This girl does it all and does it all 100%. She is a natural talent who has and will continue to go nowhere but up, with or without Disney. You can't touch that stuff y'all! Btw - give a listen to her new single off her upcoming album "These 4 Walls". It's very different and it really showcases Miley's deep voice and singing ability. She rocks!!

I'll say im a fan for sure. The article has a comment that the song has been done, well DUH!!! Almost any topic has been put into a song. there is always one differnece, the singer. Miley in this case turns out something different even if she has already has already put out a song on the topic. and again, SO WHAT?! I personally dont like some of the most popular singers, you can think of some on your own, and yet i hear their songs everywhere. DEAL WITH IT!!!

When a teen starlet grows up, her fans grow up with her - and move on. Just look at how popular Hilary Duff was a few years back. Where is she making headlines now? Not in the right places.

i hated how in the video she kept showin` off her dog tag
the song was ok, the video was not. shes not meant to be a rockstar

Being a good few months older than Cyrus I feel I can relate quite easily to her and much that surrounds her. People have to remember that she really is still just a kid, and is still growing and learning. The papparazi present major problems for most of Hollywood these days, and it seems that their impact and role in Hollywood is merely intensifying.
Personally I am a big Miley fan, and think that she has achieved so so much already, and will only go further. I love the song 7 things, and can't wait for the release of 'Breakout', the much anticipated album to be released this month!
Keep going Miley, you're doing a brilliant job!

Miley Cyrus is simply trying too hard. She should really just stick with the music style she is good at rather than attempting to boost her career with this poor, already-been-done video and song. I know she wants to gradually dispose of her "Disney, tween girl" image, but does she also want to dispose of her fans too?

She is still a teeny-bopper in my eyes. Cyrus may be singing from real life experiences but the song itself still sounds like something manufactured by Disney. The girl really has to to something drastic to make me thing otherwise. I commend Hilary Duff for finally breaking free. War.Inc puts the icing on the top of the cake with her impression of a Russian superstar who puts a scorpion down her pants and then moans in pleasure. Bravo!

Miley rocks

In my personal opinion I think that miley cyrus will be just another lindsey lohan or one of the very messed up olsen twins, she cant sing all that well, and if she were truly into her music then she would not be at Disney! if she were really something then she would be proforming with artist like; Bow Wow, Chris Brown, Lil Mamma, Ciara, T-Pain, Usher, Young Joc, Souja Boy, the list can go on and on!

Truthfully I don't like her. She has no singing voice for her life. 7 Things is such a wannabe Avril Lavigne punk-girl song and the video is just plain stupid. Miley's trying to try something new but its not working. She's only 15 and she trying to hard to be way older then that. She needs discipline. I admit I used to like her, you know, in the beginning of Hannah Montana when it first came out but she's changed A LOT since she became famous. But really its just little girls who look up to her because they don't actually know what she's doing outside of the entertainment world. She's really only famous because of her dad and show, if she didn't get the lead part as Hannah Montana some other girl would be just like her. I know, I know the Best Of Both Worlds Tour was sold out and the hottest tour, but that was because of the Jonas Brothers, because when she extended her tour and someone else was her opening act, tickets sales went down badly and the Jonas Brothers Tour was sold out. The Jonas Brothers made that tour sell, not Miley, and they should get credit for it, because on the commercials for the tour, it would say Miley in big letters and Jonas Brothers in small letters when the Jonas Brothers actually made that tour famous. Miley has definitely got to stop.

Umm yeh Miley freakin rocks and I hate all the haters they need to get a freakin life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I love Miley and I would've bough her tickets if I could've but just becuz the Jonas Brothers was the opening act doesn't mean she's not a good singer! There are ALOT more fans then there are haters and you haters just want to make the Miley Cyrus fans feel bad well im not gonna feel bad cuse I like Miley and you haters just need to stop lising to her stuff and let the miley fans comment her stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I h8te miley h8ters!!!

I LOVE MILEY CYRUS SHE TOTALY RULES I LOVE ALL MILEY CYRUS LOVERS
Posted by: Hannah | July 12, 2008 at 03:27 PM
you know
the Jonas Brothers got their start by opening for Miley Cyrus
their fans dont give credit for that
so if a few people didnt go to here concert while she was on tour after the Jonas Brothers left, thats not surprising
but i repeat: the Jonas Brothers got their start opening for Miley Cyrus
thier fans dont give her credit for that
and they are not that bad either
so if your gonna say the Jonas Brothers should receive credit for helping sell out the concert tour
then Miley should receive credit for getting them into the public's eye
and one other thing, ever since Miley started her career
people have said she will fall the way of Lindsay, Hilary, Brittany, and Paris
in short, the wrong way
right now there is no sign of such things, she is not out doing drugs, drinking, or whatever
yeah she has had a few mistake, but who hasnt
so really, stop labeling her, she will go the way she determines herself

hey give the girl a break! I like her and the song! truly i didn't really care for her till now so back off hannah haters, she a a 15 yr old just doin' her thing!
