Los Angeles Earthquake

July 29, 2008 |  5:53 pm

A reader shows the earthquake damage at his Santa Monica office

It wasn't exactly "The Big One", as reader Neil's photo demonstrates.  ("Damage in Santa Monica" is the title he gave his photo, submitted to Latimes.com's user-generated photo and video site, Your Scene.)

Earlier today, we asked you if you felt the magnitude 5.4 earthquake that shook Southern California.  Your responses ran the gamut from frightened to blase to downright perplexing (my personal favorite: "in my country bam earthquake was a very bad event... i love bon jovi," said reader Pesian Boy).  In retrospect, were our nerves shaken more than our foundations?  Did you find any damage at home or at work?  Were you rattled by aftershocks?  Weigh in here.

Got your own photo or video?  We'd love to see it!

We felt the ground shake during chow in Camp Pendleton.

My family and I are from Saskatchewan Canada and we were just in Disneyland and area 2 weeks ago and I am shocked today thinking we were that close to being in an earthquake.God protect those who are living and visiting there.

THE EARTHQUAKE TODAY WAS KIND OF STRONG!!!!!!!!
I HAVE A QUESTION WHEN COULD A EARTHQUAKE HAPPEN BUT WILL IT BE STRONGER THEN THE ONE WE HAD???????

i felt it all the way in san diego.
i was parked on the roof parking lot of Whole Foods.
my car started moving, sort of like a Bull bucking (not harsh but not gentle either).

pretty bizarre.

The last "big one" my 16 yo grandson was 2 yo. This is the first earthquake he has truly experienced. He was in school, heard the rumbling, wondered "what the?", then saw the desk in front move one way and then back. Jumped up, yelled out, "Earthquake!" and by then it was finished. His 4 yo brother was "dancing" at pre-school so he didn't feel anything. Their 10 yo brother was home alone. When we called he was crying but did the right thing - got under the table. The 4 yo showed us last night "you get under your desk and you hold onto the leg and put your hand over your head and curl into a ball." Thanks, teachers.

i was on the road. i didn't feel a thing. but a car swerved in front of me. i didn't appreciate that, but i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt in saying it was the earthquake.

This is just weakening Los Angeles more. It is surely going to sink one day... and i do not think that day is too far... one day she will be laying under the the bottom of the sea... sure

I was in Disneyland, too! It was lucky that the Indiana Jones ride was closed, otherwise it'd be a lot scarier! I was in the gift shops when it happened. I can't believe that line for refunds at customer services! Eventually, I got my money back though, which was really tiring. At first I thought some intense roller coaster was passing by, but then I realized, Disneyland doesn't HAVE roller coasters! :P

Oh c'mon people - this was NOT a serious earthquake. Toughen up! This one was just a fun ride!

i didnt even feel the earthquake. i live in san diego and a friend had to tell me about it.

My cousin was at McDonalds in Wal-Mart during the earthquake he was buying burgers he gave his money and then all of a sudden there was an earthquake he ran under the table. After the earthquake the manger in Wal-Mart went on the loud speaker and said EVERYONE leave the store BUT my cousin didn't he went back to the person and said Hey u have to make me my food. That women was crying cause she was scared of the earthquake and scared of this guy who won't let her leave so she was crying and making his food the women gave him 2 burgers he said i order 3 so she gave him his food. After that he started laughing because that person looks just like my other cousin so it made it even more halarious but then he felt bad telling that person to make his food when that girl was thinking of her family.I am from Canada and that was my first earthquake i felt.

I was at Disneyland too. I live in Nebraska (no, I'm not a famer or a hick) We had just walked through a gift shop and toy boxes started falling off the shelves in this weird domino effect. The track lighting was swaying and I did lose my balance. So did the person working there. Before I really realized what it was, it was over.
But, I have to say, this was my first quake and it wasn't as bad as I imagined it would be. Granted, it was only 5.4...God bless you all in L.A. if/when the big one hits. L.A. is a great town - I visit there often. I so hope nothing happens there - ALL, BE SAFE & GOD BLESS.

The earthquake was definitely big! It was more so because of it's unexpected nature.

Anything over 4.0 can be readily felt and can be a bit unnerving~~the bigger the MORE unnerving! I had never thought about those visiting having to live with and through our natural disasters/events. All of those that were visiting, we are glad you made it home safe and unharmed! For those still in CA we really need to work on developing the CalMagNet network. It is ground sensors to look for an electromagnetic inkling of a quake ~~particularly those over M4.0. I think QuakeFinder and NASA are onto something very cool here and I just hope we invest time, money and energy into developing the science before it is too late!
