Jim Webb, we hardly knew ye
"Under no circumstances will I be a candidate for vice president."
That's what Virginia Republican-turned-Democrat senator Jim Webb (who was seen as a likely veep candidate for Barack Obama) said yesterday -- our own Top of the Ticket broke the news, and the Ticket's readers had a lot to say about it!
Seni thought Webb was on the right track:
I praise senator Webb for sticking to his commitment to continue to be a senator and learn how he can better serve the people. This shows good character and respect for the people who just voted for him.
Eldon Thompson also agreed with Webb's decision, saying that he was more of an asset in Congress than he would have been as Obama's second-in-command:
Good Move Sen. Jim Webb ... YOU will provide greater ledership in the Senate ... more opportunity to make a difference for Veterans and Seniors - I am both.
Don Jones questioned the senator's motivation to drop out:
With all due respect to Jim Webb, all this means is that he knew he wasn't going to get chosen. If you believe his explanation for not wanting the job, I have a bridge in Alaska I'd like to sell you.
jthomas didn't know what all the fuss was about:
They are all withdrawing as they know they were not chosen - it allows them to save face... plain and simple.
...and then there's Schratboy, who just didn't seem to care much for Webb at all:
The reality is that Webb is just another attention-grabbing, pocket-lining, lobbyist coddling parasite.

About that bridge to Alaska...how much? I'm sure we can get Dick Cheney and his oil friends to stump up the cash.

I clicked on this story in the Google News aggregator and found it consists of comments from readers. Disappointing. I wanted a reporter's work. Stories like this ought not to make it to Google News.

Looking at Jim Webb's photograph, it is almost like looking at a younger McCain!! When Jim Webb gets into his late 60s and hits 71, he will look lke McCain's twin. Don't agree? Look at his photo again and IMAGINE him with sparse gray hair, many more crowsfeet and fake smile and you will be looking at McCain!! It's uncanny!!
Senator Obama has most likely already determined his "pool" of VP candidates, in fact I believe he knows exactly who he will select for this running mate. I believe these folks that are "turning down" the candidacy which has NEVER BEEN OFFERRED TO THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE are being silly. Indeed, how can anyone of us turn down a job that has never been offered to us??? It does not make sense, does it? Well, their turning down the VP slot without being chosen for it does not make sense either!! What are these guys trying to prove??
