Republican Jim Nielsen wins state Senate seat
Veteran Republican lawmaker Jim Nielsen is returning to the Legislature after he won a special election for the vacant 4th Senate District seat in Northern California.
The Yuba City rancher, who served in the Senate from 1978 to 1990 and the Assembly during the last four years, won 66.7% of the vote in the election Tuesday, beating Democratic labor leader Michael "Mickey" Harrington of Magalia.
The special election was held after Republican state Sen. Doug La Malfa won a seat in Congress.
Nielsen’s election does not affect the Democrats' supermajority in the Senate, but California Republican Party Chairman Tom Del Beccaro said the lawmaker will represent the minority party well.
"Jim will serve the north state with the integrity and accountability it deserves, and Republicans can look to Jim to fight for lower taxes and smaller government," he said.ALSO:
