Alarcon loses race for 39th Assembly District

Legislative aide Raul Bocanegra defeated Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alarcon in the 39th Assembly District in the San Fernando Valley, preliminary election results show.

Alarcon, a former state senator, battled fellow Pacoima resident Bocanegra for a seat being vacated by Democrat Felipe Fuentes.

Bocanegra beat Alarcon by 17 percentge points, with the vote from all district precincts counted, state election results show.

Alarcon, 58, placed second in the June primary behind 43-year-old Bocanegra in a race that featured four other candidates.

Alarcon and his wife face trial on 23 felony counts of perjury and voter fraud. Los Angeles County prosecutors allege that the couple lied about where they lived so he could run for City Council in 2006 and 2008.

Bocanegra served previously as an aide to former Los Angeles City Council President Alex Padilla.
