Days after prison yard riots left 17 inmates injured and one dead, as well as one shot after corrections officers opened fire, California corrections officials reported two more outbreaks, at a men’s prison in Solano County.

On Friday, the entire inmate population at California State Prison-Solano was put on lockdown after two more prison yard fights, each involving more than 60 inmates. The prison reports the first disturbance occurred at 1 p.m. at the medium security prison in Vacaville. The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said officers used pepper spray and fired two warning shots from a Mini-14 rifle. Two injured inmates were taken by ambulance to area hospitals.

Half an hour later, fights broke out on another yard and in buildings in the prison, involving more than 60 inmates at four locations. Officials reported four inmates injured, including one who was hospitalized.

The Solano prison is among the state’s overcrowded facilities, currently housing more than 4,200 inmates. It was designed for 2,600.

An estimated 60 inmates were involved in Wednesday’s fight at the California State Prison-Sacramento, in Folsom. Corrections officers fired six rounds from a Mini-14 rifle to quell the outbreak. One inmate was hit by gunshot. He and 12 other inmates, suffering injuries including slash and stab wounds and head trauma, were taken to hospitals. Guards recovered four inmate-made weapons.

On Saturday, Sept. 15, an estimated 30 inmates were involved in a riot at the maximum-security Salinas Valley State Prison after two inmates reportedly stabbed a third, killing him. The 42-year-old victim was serving a life-without-parole sentence from San Bernardino County for first-degree murder, second-degree robbery, vehicle theft and grand theft. Four inmates were injured in the riot, including two who were airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
