Gov. Jerry Brown will headline a cast of top state Democrats at a Sacramento fundraiser Monday for embattled incumbent Rep. Howard Berman.

Berman (D-Valley Village) is facing an expensive and increasingly nasty race against fellow Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman. The two were placed in the same congressional district under new maps drawn by an independent citizen’s panel last year.

In addition to Brown, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Council President Herb Wesson, Speaker John A. Perez (D-Los Angeles) and Senate leader Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) will be in attendance.

Before being elected to Congress, where he has served since 1982, Berman was a state Assemblyman. During his tenure he became locked in a divisive fight for speaker with two San Francisco Democrats -- Leo McCarthy and Willie Brown, the man who eventually won that leadership post.

Berman has risen through the ranks of the Democratic House leadership in Washington, serving as the highest-ranking Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Sherman, an eight-term incumbent, also has strong institutional support, having picked up endorsements from former President Bill Clinton.
