Podcast: Jerry Brown's tax pitch; lawmakers sue over budget powers

Gov. Jerry Brown hit the road again this week to sell his tax initiative to business groups. In this week's Capital Notes podcast, KQED's John Myers and Times staff writer Anthony York discuss the governor’s pitch and the campaign ahead.

A new poll from the Public Policy Institute of California showed strong support for the governor’s measure, but also had some warning signals for Brown. While voters say they support the governor’s proposal to raise taxes on sales and upper incomes, a separate question showed more than two-thirds of likely voters oppose a sales-tax hike.

That will be Brown’s political challenge as he continues to raise money and sell his plan to voters before the November election.

Also discussed this week is the lawsuit legislative leaders filed against state Controller John Chiang over his authority to dock lawmakers’ pay in future budget standoffs.
