Darrell Steinberg affirms support for Fran Pavley

As former Assembly Speaker Robert Hertzberg mulls over a run for state Senate, Sen. Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) has sent an email to his caucus stating his support for the current incumbent, Sen. Fran Pavley (D-Agoura Hills).

The irony is that Steinberg originally was involved in recruiting Hertzberg to run for the post against Republican Tony Strickland (R-Moorpark) in a newly drawn competitive district that includes the western part of the San Fernando Valley and coastal communities including Malibu.

The thought was that Pavley would move north to a more solidly Democratic seat centered in Oxnard, allowing Hertzberg, a more moderate Democrat, to run in the competitive seat. Now that Pavley says she’s not moving, Hertzberg told Capitol Weekly he’s still considering a run, even if that means running against a Democratic incumbent.

Below is a copy of the Steinberg email to his caucus obtained by the Times:

Colleagues. This afternoon, the Capitol Weekly published a blog piece where Bob Hertzberg indicated he was considering a run in the 27th Senate District. Though I do not believe Bob would in fact run against our colleague Senator Pavley, I want to state the following so that there is no misunderstanding.
Our caucus stands wholeheartedly and enthusiastically behind Fran Pavley in the 27th Senate district. Fran is a great legislator. Her work and accomplishments are legendary in the environmental field. She is also shown a consistent willingness to forge agreements with the business community and other stake holders to move forward important economic issues. (Downtown Los Angeles convention center and water are two recent examples)
Fran will win this race. She is already hard at work securing endorsements and raising significant dollars. If you have not yet contributed the maximum to Fran's effort, please do so before the end of December. Please call me if you have any questions. Thank you.
Darrell
