Jerry Brown’s Hall of Fame event to exclude media

Gov. Jerry Brown will help induct the latest class of luminaries into the California Hall of Fame Thursday, a list that includes Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Carlos Santana and the Beach Boys. But one group won’t be on hand to watch the event: the media.

The Hall of Fame ceremony, set to take place Thursday night in Sacramento, is sponsored by the California Museum. But don’t let the name fool you. Although it shares office space with the state archives and is right next door to the secretary of state’s office, the museum is a private, nonprofit entity.

Brown spokeswoman Elizabeth Ashford deferred questions about the event to the museum, saying the prohibition on admitting media “was not our stipulation. It was theirs.”

Museum spokeswoman Brenna Hamilton, who seemed embarrassed about barring the press from the Memorial Auditorium for the ceremony, said it was a condition imposed by the museum’s media sponsors – Comcast Cable and the Sacramento Bee.

For the rest of us, Comcast is planning to air the event live from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.in some markets. A full list of inductees is available here.

[Updated Friday, 11:36 a.m.]The Bee’s Community Affairs Director Pam Dinsmore said in a statement Friday ‘ The Sacramento Bee did not place any restrictions on outside press at the last night’s Hall of Fame Ceremony. We were the pool for photography and our reporter, Chris Macias, wrote a story from the ‘Red Carpet,’ not inside the auditorium. Both had to be credentialed through the California Museum.’
