'The Daily Show' takes aim at California initiative process
Add "The Daily Show" to the list of critics taking aim at California’s initiative process.
A segment that aired Monday on the Comedy Central show used Amazon.com’s aborted campaign to repeal the state’s Internet sales-tax collection law to showcase what Democrats have referred to as “direct democracy” gone wild.
John Burton, the salty state party chairman, described it a bit differently before a national audience –- we just can’t quote him here.
“You curse more than a West Coast rapper,” said correspondent John Oliver.
“A who?” Burton replied.
Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (R-San Bernardino), the tea party lawmaker fighting to repeal the California Dream Act, provided the Republican counterpoint, characterizing the Internet levy as “illegal taxes that are going to be used to subsidize illegals.”
Oliver, in turn, suggested an initiative to give Donnelly his own holiday. Watch the clip.
