The folks who run political campaigns like slogans and catchy nicknames, and the people behind Democratic activist Torie Osborn’s race for a Westside-based Assembly seat came up with this one to describe her grassroots efforts: “Camp VicTorie.”

Camp VicTorie trained more than 100 volunteers -- community leaders the campaign hopes will help propel Osborn to victory next year in her race for the newly drawn 50th District. Osborn said the training was based on that used in Obama for America, the Courage Campaign and other organizing efforts.

Osborn faces competition from Assemblywoman Betsy Butler (D-Marina del Rey), who has been lining up backers for weeks. On Friday, she added three Malibu elected officials to her list: Mayor Laura Rosenthal, Mayor Pro Tem Lou La Monte and Councilwoman Pamela Conley Ulich.

Also Friday, Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom, another Democrat, reminded supporters that he’s running for the Assembly seat too. He sent out e-mails saying he wanted to do something about the “state of perpetual crisis” that plagues the Legislature. He listed several priorities he would tackle, including public schools, the economy and the environment. And he wants to “restore the public’s confidence” in the Legislature.
