Center for Governmental Studies to close

October 13, 2011 |  5:09 pm

The nonprofit Center for Governmental Studies in Los Angeles is shutting down after 28 years of researching and recommending improvements to political and government processes in California and other states.

Over the years, the center has helped develop reforms of campaign finance laws, state budgeting, ballot measures and higher education, often advising local and state agencies on improvements.

Chief Executive Officer Tracy Westen and President Bob Stern said they will stay active in issues that kept the center busy in recent decades, but that the center has fallen on difficult financial times.

“With some sadness, but with considerable pride in our accomplishments, we are closing the Center for Governmental Studies’ offices after 28 years of service in the public interest,’’ the two men said in a statement.  “The recession has depleted our funding, and we cannot continue to operate CGS in its present form.’’
