Gov. Jerry Brown plans bill-signing ceremony with stadium developers

Gov. Jerry Brown has scheduled a bill-signing ceremony for Tuesday with Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), the sponsor of legislation that would smooth the way for its construction of an NFL stadium in downtown Los Angeles.

Brown’s invitation only says it is a ‘special event on creating jobs and revitalizing California’s economy’’ and his office would not elaborate Saturday, but the ceremony is planned to be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, which would get a new West Hall as part of the stadium project.

Other community leaders who support the stadium bill have also been invited.

AEG plans to spend $1.2 billion to build a 72,000-seat football stadium. The legislation on the governor’s desk would require any environmental lawsuit challenging the stadium project to be filed with the state Court of Appeal and be decided within 175 days.

That, AEG officials said, would protect the project from protracted litigation and give investors and the NFL important confidence that the project will not be delayed for years.

However, some environmentalists oppose SB 292 for giving special treatment to one developer on provisions of a law meant to protect Californians from unreasonable traffic, air pollution and other environmental problems.
