Five Republican state senators who have been negotiating with Gov. Jerry Brown over a potential budget accord declared those talks at an “impasse” Monday in an open letter to the governor.

“Although it is clear that you engaged in our conversation seriously, it appears we have reached an impasse,” read the letter signed by Sens. Tom Berryhill (R-Modesto), Sam Blakeslee (R-San Luis Obispo), Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres), Bill Emmerson (R-Redlands) and Tom Harman (R-Huntingon Beach).

Gil Duran, Brown’s press secretary, had no immediate comment.

Brown had tentatively set this Thursday as his deadline to pass a budget package, though earlier Monday he said talks would likely extend a few more days.
