In a bright spot for House Democrats, Rep. Loretta Sanchez of Garden Grove survived her first serious challenge in 14 years, fending off the Republican onslaught that is sending many of her Capitol Hill colleagues packing.

Sanchez had a 9-point lead over termed-out Assemblyman Van Tran, California’s first Vietnamese American state legislator.

Democrat Jerry McNerney of Pleasanton was neck and neck with Republican attorney David Harmer, according to an Associated Press tally. McNerney is a wind engineer who ousted Republican Richard Pombo four years ago.

Hanford Republican cherry farmer Andy Vidak was barely ahead of Democrat Jim Costa of Fresno.

In the 45th congressional district, GOP incumbent Mary Bono Mack also appeared headed back to Washington. With 65% of precincts counted, Bono was leading Democrat Steve Pougnet by 11 percentage points.
