‘Meg-mentum’ hits the OC

November 1, 2010 |  3:59 pm

Rallying volunteers in Costa Mesa, GOP gubernatorial nominee Meg Whitman predicted victory on Election Day.

"We are going to win this thing," Whitman said, beaming. "It is really, really exciting."

Standing in front of young volunteers who were holding "Meg-mentum" signs, Whitman praised the scores of supporters who gathered in an office park to make phone calls urging voters to cast ballots for Whitman.

"You all are fantastic," she said. "This office has done so much for this campaign, for California, for our children and our grandchildren. Give yourself a huge round of applause."

"This is my third rally of the day in offices like this, I've got a couple more to go," she continued. "I can feel the energy and the enthusiasm."

Whitman phoned five voters, mostly leaving voicemails urging people to support her and reminding them of their polling places. But the first voter she called, Jeanine, assured her that she, her husband and two other family members planned to vote for Whitman, prompting the candidate to ring a bell four times.

As she placed the calls, a volunteer held up an iPhone to snap a picture and yelled "Ms. Governor."

Whitman instantly looked up.

"See, I answered," she said. "That was a test, I knew that."
