Bay Area Democrat Jerry McNerney reelected to Congress

With fewer than 1,900 ballots remaining to be counted Wednesday, Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-Pleasanton) won his tough reelection bid against Republican challenger David Harmer.

By midday Wednesday, McNerney held a 2,474-vote lead over Harmer, an attorney and son of a former state legislator, giving the congressman a 48%-to-46.9% edge. American Independent Party candidate David Christensen had 5.1%.

The race was the last congressional contest in California to be resolved, and the seat was in one of three Democratic districts targeted by Republicans. Although Republicans won enough seats around the country to take control of the House of Representatives in the Nov. 2 election, no California congressional seat changed party hands.

The two other targeted Democrats were Loretta Sanchez of Garden Grove and Jim Costa of Fresno. Democrats unsuccessfully targeted Republicans Dan Lungren of the Sacramento area and Mary Bono Mack of Palm Springs.
