U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer is projected to win a fourth term in the U.S. Senate, based on early returns and exit poll results.

With 16.2% of precincts reporting, Boxer was ahead 48% to 46.3%.

Boxer defeated former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina after a bruising multimillion-dollar campaign. The Democratic incumbent bucked the national tide that saw Republicans make gains in the Senate and take control of the House of Representatives.

Boxer, 69, faced the fiercest challenge of her career amid withering attacks from Fiorina on her record in Washington and a sour anti-incumbent mood. Fiorina, 56, ran as a conservative Republican in Democrat-dominated California, touting her business credentials as a salve to Washington’s woes.

Fiorina is the only woman to have headed a Fortune 20 company. But Boxer had turned Fiorina’s record at the company against her, accusing the former CEO of outsourcing jobs and laying off 30,000 workers.

Boxer enlisted the help of President Barack Obama in the campaign, using his appearances in the state to both boost her fundraising and rally the Democratic base. She also featured Obama in her television commercials.
